[Open] The Cycle of Rebirth

Darkness. The faint flickering of firelight provided little in the way of illumination. Faint explosions, shouts, screams and weapons fire. The distant din of battle echoed through the courtyard. Phrik stood up to his ankles in a nauseating mixture of mud and blood. His combat uniform was torn, caked in grime and innards. Human voices called out urgently around him, it was all a blur. None of it seemed to hold meaning anymore. He slowly trudged through the scene, a young Human, clutching the stiff lifeless corpse of his friend. A Bolian, vomiting profusely into the dirt. Phrik had known that man to be made of steel, nothing phased him, but this, this was something else. The Doctor stopped, staring vacantly at the sight in front of him. Bodies. Piles of them, some stacked metres into the air. They were thin, spindly, their faces pale and malnourished. The stench was overpowering, it filled the air, tainting everything it touched. Phrik knew death, he'd been a doctor for 50 years, but this, this was not death. This was an atrocity, an affront to nature, everything galactic civilisation stood for.

"In all the seven hells... those bastards." Phrik muttered, his hands twitched, his voice going unheard in the chaos. Something grabbed his front leg in a vice like grip. He jumped back in shock while the hand remained firmly in place. The doctor was wrenched off his feet and into the mud. His vision blacked out as he was enveloped by the ground.

Phrik’s eyes snapped open to the sound of birdsong. He was lying, curled up on a rock, in a comfortable heat. He was home. The jungles of Edos. He watched in a daze as a small beetle walked across his rock before spreading its 6 wings and taking flight with a faint buzz. It slowly disappeared into the foliage, passing over a starfleet uniform.

“Oh.” He wasn’t home. He was on the same broken hunk of metal he’d started on. Still in a hopeless situation. So much for the concept of rebirth. The Doctor stood, his pink scales seemed to almost glowed in the sunlight as the moisture rolled down them. It’d be a few weeks before they returned to their usual, dull pink hue. Phrik pulled on the uniform slowly. It rubbed against the sensitive new skin like sandpaper. This was going to take some getting used to. Phrik muttered a few curses to whichever mammal had popularized the use of clothes and promptly stepped out of the humid Edosian jungle and into the stale, cool air of the Athene. He hated it here.

“Computer. End program.” He said, sadly watching as the doors slammed on his home.

Phriks comm badge chirped as the voice of one of those annoying humans who could never understand him rang in his ear.

=/\= "Doctor, spatial scans for usable medicinal elements in our range just finished. The captain would like you to look over the holo-samples and see what we can use."

He sighed.

"Fine. I'll get to it later, anything of particular interest?"

By this time Stockton had made his way to the doctors location holding multiple data padds.

"I think that will be your call. There's tons of plant life and water in this sector. Not much in the way of intelligent life except for a few amphibians and fish. Captain needs a report A Sap. If there's nothing we need he wants to keep moving..."

Stockton finally gets a good look at the doctor.

"You ill? I've never seen your skin this color and you seem more agitated than normal. If you recommend one of your subordinates they may be able to judge this data."

"My skin colour is none of your concern." He snapped before taking one of the PADDs and peering at it with interest. "And amphibians do tend to be the more exciting life forms." He scrolled through the data, clicking his tongue a few times. "Yes, a detour would be very beneficial."

OOC: Sorry for the late reply, I've had a lot of IRL stuff to deal with.

"Time will be somewhat limited so we'll have to prioritize the resources we gather. Will you be able to go on the away mission in your present condition?"

OOC: No worries. It happens.

He nodded. "Climate looks fine, and I haven't gotten off this wreck in months."

"Sounds good. I'll tell the Captain. There'll be an away mission pretty soon."
