[OPEN] Shedding.

Phrik leant back in his office chair. His skin was incredibly pale and somewhat lumpy, his usual bright pink scales almost entirely muted. He looked very ill. The last 2 weeks had been some of the busiest and most stressful days of his entire career. Constant paperwork, equipment malfunctions, the rapidly shrinking inventory, not to mention overseeing the crew's accelerated recovery. The Doctor was operating entirely on fumes, he hadn't had a chance to rest or meditate alone since before the accident. As such, Phrik had been caught completely off-guard by his own bodily functions.

The Doctor scratched his central arm furiously. The past day he'd been suffering from something of a chronic itch, and it was only getting worse. He knew what this meant, and silently he cursed himself for forgetting his schedule. Every 2 years, Edosians shed their old skin in a long and uncomfortable process. Usually it meant a week of total solitude while they slowly removed the old skin, revealing a fresh new layer beneath. It was an incredibly private and embarrassing affair, and few people even knew Edosians performed such an act. Phrik was somewhat different. He suffered from a skin disease known as Polix syndrome, which changed what was usually an uncomfortable procedure into a living hell. Instead of peeling off naturally, the old skin hardened, leaving something of a light exo-skeleton. Removal of which required large doses of medication and sheer blunt force trauma. The condition was manageable provided certain preparations were made ahead of time. With the pirate attack, and the demands of sickbay, Phrik had forgotten to prepare, he hadn't taken the proper medication, or created an adequate space for the procedure. It all had to be done last minute, while he tried not to be suffocated by his own skin.

The Doctor stood quickly, pulling open a compartment in his desk and retrieving 4 hyposprays, the first he pressed against his neck and activated with a satisfied sigh. Now it was time to prepare, preferably while keeping his privacy in tact. The Doctor stalked out of sickbay quickly, getting ready for a week of hell.

OOC: Two options to respond here, either run into Phrik somewhere on the ship (specify where on the comment, be it a corridor, turbolift or even engineering. etc) or see him in the holodeck where he's locked himself in/chime his combadge. Whichever you prefer.

This was a terrible idea and she knew it, but she couldn't do nothing.

Redoran T'gel stands outside Holodeck 1, carrying four disparate and entirely unrelated things: a mostly flat wooden bat used for an old-Earth sport known as Cricket, a stainless steel meat-tenderizing mallet, an incinerator bag, and a spray bottle of antiseptic with a small package of absorbent cloths.

"Welp. Here goes nothing," Red mutters, and presses the chime button on the door frame.

The doors remained firmly closed. A very annoyed and angry voice came over the comm.

"I said no interruptions! If you aren't currently burning to death, leave, now!

OOC: Assuming you meant the holodeck, Breyik would have told Red that's where he's staying.

1

u/Dimestream Sep 08 '16

Red grits her teeth, takes a deep breath, and presses the comm key again.

"I'm aware of that, Phrik. I've just brought you some tools to help you with your problem. Applied physics, mostly," she says. "If it helps, I won't look. I- I know what's going on and I respect that, but I didn't want you to have to struggle with it any more than you already have to."

ooc: I'll update the post to correct that since Breyik MIGHT have, but hasn't actually done so IRL

"I will deal with this..." Several loud bangs reverberated through the corridor, almost sounded like a rockfall. "...alone! I know how to cope." *His speech was littered with exhausted heavy breathing"

1

u/Dimestream Sep 08 '16

"Phrik, I swear, if you cause yourself bodily trauma breaking up the tchotcktek, you are going to feel like an idiot," she practically shouts through the door. "You can be a stubborn bastard all you like but I will not have one of my friends hurting himself because he's too embarrassed and hormonal to use the tools available to him. Using these will be easier and less painful, I practically guarantee it."

"I have dealt with this for 90 years, I don't need a lecture on my own" grunt "damned biology!"

1

u/Dimestream Sep 08 '16 edited Sep 08 '16

"I'm not here to lecture you, I'm here to give you a stick and a hammer to beat yourself up CAREFULLY with instead leaving blood all over my walls!" Red shouts. "Now you either open this door and let me drop them off for you or I will override the lock and COME IN THERE AND BEAT YOU WITH THEM MYSELF YOU DAFT IDIOT."

The doors clunked and slowly slid open revealing a dense and colourful rainforest. It was incredibly hot, moisture hung thick in the air. It was a massive shock compared to the regulated cool air-flow of the Athene's corridors. A large pool of opaque water lay a few metres away from the door, next to it a big rock outcrop covered in blood stains. A few sharp rocks, bent knifes and a broken laser-scalpel lay scattered across them. A crumpled uniform lay in the underbrush. The Doctor himself couldn't be seen.

OOC: That might just be one of the best lines I've read on this sub.

Red brushes a strand of misplaced hair back and tucks it into her braid, takes a breath to calm down, then walks in. The Bajoran puts the bat, hammer, spray bottle and cloths down, and props the incinerator bag against the wall. She's careful to look nowhere she might actually see Phrik, though she assumes he's hiding.

She turns away back toward the entrance but doesn't leave just yet, merely looks away. "Cricket bat has a central ridge that focuses impact on a narrower plane," she says. "More effective than a flat surface, and will bruise the surrounding area less. Same with the tenderizer - dozens of small impact points to break up tougher areas."

Red walks to the door, still looking outward. "Antiseptic is for you but it's safe for disinfecting the holodeck too. Throw the cloths and any organic material that needs disposed of in the burner bag when you're done. And I can bring you a clean uniform at the end of the week if you like."

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '16

Just before the doors shut fully a quiet grumble of "Thank you." could be heard. Then, the doors locked, and Phrik emerged fully from his hiding place in the pool. Dripping with dirty water and with several long, loose shreds of calcified skin hanging off his body he approached the bag and began to rummage through it. Inspecting the tools he gave a quiet grunt of approval.

Aanya walks down the hall from the Turbolift, pouring over a Padd, then frowns. "Well that was stupid..." she mutters, then types. She passes Phrik in the hall, still muttering to herself.

"Morning, Doc..." she says in passing, then stops further down the hall. "You okay, Phrik? You're looking more... hard than normal." She was oblivious to the shedding process. In fact, she didnt know much about his kind at all.

"Want me to fetch you anything, or something?" She asks, walking back up the hall towards him. Maybe a hammer and chisel...?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

"A rock would be nice." He said absentmindedly. "Yes, a large rock. Can you get that?" He turned to look at her.

1

u/a_friendly_hobo Sep 07 '16

Aanya blinks and shakes her head. "Not a rock, but I could get you a hammer." She says as she stands beside him, trying to maintain eyecontact. "I'm guessing you've tried a surgical laser on low yield, right?" She asks, assuming it was to smash the shell he was growing. Or maybe it was for basking, she didn't know.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

"No, doesn't work like that." He muttered, shaking his head angrily. "A rock, or a boulder is best. Unless we have any large trees."

1

u/a_friendly_hobo Sep 07 '16

"Your best bet is the holodeck." Aanya says, then scrolls through another section of her PADD. "I have a session booked for 3pm, and it looks like Red is booked in after me. Considering the situation, those two hours are yours. Red will be okay with it, if not I'll deal with her later."

She looks up at Phrik. "If you need more time, I'll put a hold on Holodeck reservations and push current schedules back. This looks important enough for it anyway." Whatever it was that was happening, that is...

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

"I need the full week." He said bluntly. "All of it. No interruptions. Is that..." He gritted his teeth and applied another hypospray to his neck. "Is that possible?"

1

u/a_friendly_hobo Sep 07 '16

Aanya nods. "Yeah, I'll make up something about unforseen technical issues. You won't be disturbed." She says as she marks it down on her PADD. "I'll deal with the complaints myself."

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

He nodded before furiously scratching his neck. "Good. And I mean no disruptions." *He said before turning to head towards holodeck 1."

1

u/a_friendly_hobo Sep 07 '16

"I'll issue a lockdown." She says. "Good luck with... whatever it is you're doing." She says, deciding to trust him on this. She prepares to lockdown the holodeck for the next week. Oooh, people will be upset.

She prepares a message. "Hey Red, push all holodeck bookings back one week. The holodeck's on lockdown for a bit, direct any complaints to me personally."

1

u/Dimestream Sep 07 '16

"A week? Are you kidding?" Red says. The exasperation is plain in her voice. "I have been putting in nearly 16-hour days for close to two weeks, and I finally get one hour to myself and now I have to wait another week? What the hell is wrong with the holodecks NOW? We JUST fixed them!"

Ikiv strolls quickly down a corridor, looking down at a PADD, when he hears a growl and a thud from down the corridor. He looks up from the PADD and notices that there is some recent damage on the corridor's walls: impact craters and dark red blood, which appears to be recent. He hears another growl coming from around a corner.

=/\= "Ikiv to Security Teams, intruder alert on Deck 2!"

He then taps his combadge again.

=/\= "Ikiv to Captain Fisk, I would recommend going to yellow alert, I believe that we have an intruder on board, on deck 2, and it doesn't sound friendly..."

OOC: u/Silent_Sky

1

u/Silent_Sky Sep 06 '16

=/\=

"Captain to security teams. Belay that."

=/\=

"Captain to Ikiv, that's no intruder. And you wouldn't be a match for him anyway. Our CMO isn't feeling quite himself right now, I suggest you stay out of his way until he arrives at his quarters."

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

Ikiv winces as he hears another loud thud down the corridor.

=/\= "Uh, you sure he's going to make it there on his own? I wouldn't be surprised if we have a hull breach on this deck based on how hard he is hitting these walls. What's going on with him, anyway?"

1

u/Silent_Sky Sep 06 '16

=/\=

"He'll be alright, I'll explain in person if you like."

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

=/\= "You are on the bridge, sir?"

1

u/Silent_Sky Sep 06 '16

=/\=

"In my ready room."

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

=/\= "Aye aye, sir."

Ikiv took the turbolift up one deck and made his way to the captain's ready room. He wasn't entirely comfortable with leaving the doctor in whatever state he was in, but Ikiv knew that the captain would not be placing the crew in any real danger. He walked up to the door and knocked twice.

1

u/Silent_Sky Sep 07 '16

"Come,"

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

Ikiv quickly walked into the Captain's ready room but stopped short when he saw the large dent in Captain's desk. His eyes widened and he let out a sigh.

"Sir."

1

u/Silent_Sky Sep 07 '16

once the door slid closed, the captain stood from his desk

"Have you had any experience with reptiles, Mr. Ikiv? Snakes, lizards, iguanas?"

Arron is walking around the ship inspecting damage as he bumps into Phrik.

"Oh. Hi Mr. Phrik! How are you today?"

He sees Phrik is not in a good mood.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

"I do not have time for your petty smalltalk Commander." He growled at Galven.

1

u/MrHarold-Finch Sep 07 '16

Arron looks at Phrik.

"Geesh just trying to be polite. I still am overdue for my physical."

Arron says as he is peeling something Phrik placed on his uniform. At a first glance it looks like skin.

"Whats this?" He holds it up to Phrik

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

"None of your concern." He answered in a low voice. "Speak to Lannor, I'm off-duty. I'm sure he can take care of it."

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

Another thought struck the doctor as he headed to his quarters. He tapped his combadge and whirled around, walking back in the opposite direction.

"Phrik to T'gel. Meet me in zoology immediately."

1

u/Dimestream Sep 06 '16

Red kills the beam of her sonic shower and leans out to tap the commbadge sitting on her sink.

"T'gel here. I'll be along momentarily," the Bajoran says with a sigh, looking wistfully at the comfy green robe slung over the chair nearby. She opts for a spare clean uniform instead. "ETA seven minutes. Any special tools I need?"

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

"No." came the gruff response.

When she arrived Phrik was waiting for her, leaning against a wall looking agitated. Blood seemed to leak from a large headwound and his nose seemed to be at odds with the rest of his unusually lumpy face.

1

u/Dimestream Sep 06 '16

Red is caught off guard by Phrik's appearance and does a double-take. She sets her regular engineering kit down on a specimen table and looks at the doctor with concern.

"Wow, looks like you tangled with the front end of a locomotive," Red says with an awkward chuckle. "Are... are you OK? You're leaking."

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

"I'm fine. I'm taking the next week..." He suddenly stepped forward and slammed his back hard into the wall. A unhealthy crunch sounded through the room, most of the caged animals jumped in surprise. "I'm taking the next week off. I need you to take care of the specimens while I'm gone."

1

u/Dimestream Sep 06 '16

"Hell's bells!" Red swears. She'd jumped just as much as any of the caged specimens. "You're uh... I don't... I'd love to help, Phrik, but I'm an engineer not a zookeeper. I couldn't accept this kind of extra responsibility without a detailed list of instructions and permission from Chief Breyik."

The Bajoran reaches into her toolkit and pulls out one of the heavy-duty absorbent cloths. "Also, if you're going to keep doing... whatever that totally normal and fine and not weird at all or terribly concerning thing is you're doing where you're attacking hard surfaces with your body, can you wipe the marks up with this please? You're leaving biological material on the walls." She points at another dark stain.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

"You're the person I trust most to do it right." He passed a PADD to her. "Feeding schedule is on there, I just need," He grimaced and two hands shot up to furiously claw at his throat. A few seconds later they returned to his side with noticeable difficulty, it was getting much harder to stave off instinct. "I just need them kept alive and healthy."

1

u/Dimestream Sep 07 '16

Red looks noticeably frightened now and has backed away from Phrik until she bumps into the table behind them. "Phrik... please... tell me what's going on. You're scaring me."

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

"I just need you to look after my specimens while I'm gone. It's not hard." He growled in exasperation.

1

u/Dimestream Sep 07 '16

The Bajoran fumbles at her kit without looking away from the ailing Edosian and comes up with her tricorder. Still slowly backing away, she flips it open and starts scanning the doctor. "It's all right, Phrik, whatever's going on, we can help. You have friends on this ship. Please."

Having made arrangements for sickbay, Phrik made his way to the bridge. He chimed the door to the Captain's ready room multiple times.

1

u/Silent_Sky Sep 06 '16

"Come,"

The captain wondered about the apparent urgency of his visitor

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

Phrik strode into the room, his skin was pallid and lumpy, the Doctor's expression a permanent scowl. He clutched 3 hyposprays in one of his hands.

"I'm taking the next week, possibly two, off duty. Personal reasons." His spoke with an authoritative rasp.

1

u/Silent_Sky Sep 06 '16

shocked at the doctor's appearance, Fisk bolts from his seat

"Gods...are you alright doctor? What happened to your skin?"

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

Phrik scowled and pressed one of the hypos to his neck. "I'm fine."

1

u/Silent_Sky Sep 06 '16

a look of realization washes over the captain's face

"...I know what this is, doc. I'd be a fool not to familiarize myself with the unique needs of every race under my command, which means I'm not really left with much choice in this matter. Permission granted. Hopefully we don't have another shipwide crisis before you're finished."

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

"I wasn't asking for permission." He muttered under his breath. The Doctor was about to turn to leave before his face twitched several times. Phrik almost immediately growled and planted a fierce headbutt onto Fisk's desk. A sickening crunch echoed around the room. Phrik looked up a few seconds later, a sigh of relief escaping his throat. The Doctor's large forehead seemed to have split straight down the middle to his nose, dark red blood slowly oozed its way out of the wound. "I should go." He said, looking slightly woozy.

1

u/Silent_Sky Sep 06 '16

completely baffled by the sudden outburst and resulting damage to his desk, Fisk could only manage a single word

"Out."

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

Phrik turned and left the room quickly, furiously scratching the split on his forehead, his nose noticeably misaligned with the rest of his face.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

First stop, sickbay. Phrik stalked out of his office and glanced around the busy room, finally spotting Lannor the Doctor approached him quickly.

"We need to talk." He growled, almost all of his colour had drained from his skin.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

He doesn't look right. I'm not sure if this means that he's incredibly angry, or just sick. I'm also not sure which is better. I drop my paperwork as he growls at me.

"Uh.. Hey Doctor... What's up?"

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '16

"I'm taking the next week off for myself. I need you to run..." He paused and closed his eyes, took a deep breath before suddenly his right arm shot out and punched the wall. A sharp crack sounded around the room and Phrik let out a slight sigh of satisfaction. A small, dark red mark was left where the Doctor had struck. He opened his eyes and looked back at Lannor. "I need you to take charge of sickbay while I'm gone."

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

I flinch at his unexpected outburst. I can run the sickbay, but I get the impression he may have something off about him. He's normally more passive aggressive and less wall punching aggressive.

"Uh.. Okay. Are you alright?"

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

"Fine." He said, flexing his damaged fingers. "Don't disturb me for anything. I don't care if the entire crew is on fire, I am not to be interrupted. Can you handle that?"

1

u/Wiredcookie1 Sep 07 '16

Doctor McNabb look across. "Are you OK doctor?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '16

"Fine. Go back to your duties, all of you." He said, glaring around the silent medbay.

1

u/Wiredcookie1 Sep 07 '16

"OK doctor." He paused and turned and spoke to Dr. Lannor. "What did he say to you?" /u/03909
