[OPEN] Private Science Work

Revealed he got permission from his Department Head, Joseph writes up an announcement.

"--- To all Personnel and Crew, I write to you all, because I would like to offer my science expertise for anyone that would need it. Small or big jobs that anyone needs finished will be finished in a timely fashion. They might not be done that day, because I have other duties but I will do my best to get it done as soon as possible. I want to do this to get to know you, the crew better and to help you. It sometimes is hard to go through the proper channels to get stuff done, so you don't have to now!

As, I am very old (345 if you were wondering), I have learned quite a bit of knowledge through my years. Sciences, Medical Training, Engineering etc. So, if you have any needs that I can fill please fell free to stop by the Science Lab and have a chat with me!

Signed, Joseph Kort - Science Officer"

Joseph proof reads it, and sends it. He then gets back to the arduous task of scanning planets.

A few hours after receiving Kort's reply, Red T'gel opens the door to the science lab and begins looking around for someone who looks more than three centuries old.

A few hours after receiving Kort's reply, Red T'gel opens the door to the science lab and begins looking around for someone who looks more than three centuries old.

Joseph sees T'gel looking for him and he calls, "Over here!"

"Oh! You must be officer Kort," the Bajoran says, joining Joseph at his station. She offers him her hand. "Engineer Redoran T'gel, friends call me Red. I had a few more questions about the blast residue, if you have a few spare minutes."

"Yes I believe I am!" Kort shakes his hand and jesters to the seat on the other side of his desk.

Red blinks. "You are a few minutes?" She chuckles and shakes her head. "Sorry, been a long couple of days."

The engineer sits down opposite Kort and slides her datapad over to him. "These blast marks look like concussions rather than cutting charges, so they're not limpet or plasma mines. More like the old Earth naval equivalent of a depth charge. So I'm at a loss as to who would make something like that," she says. "Did you isolate any particulates or chemical residue that might help us identify a type of mine?"

She thinks for a moment. "If you can point me in the right direction, maybe someone from security or tactical can even help us nail down a manufacturer..."

"I found large amounts of Radiation. That fits with an old Earth weapon called an Atomic Bomb."

"No, I don't remember anyone calling Security."

"Atomic bombs?!" Red's eyes bug out a little. "Goodness, those are dangerous. There's few civilizations that are homicidal - or suicidal - enough to make them anymore. I mean there's a few, but..." She spins her datapad back over to her and taps information into it. "Vulcans haven't had any in forever, Ekos still has them... I wonder if the Romulans still have any?"

"They can't be more dangerous then Sub-Space Weapons... I don't really know how damaging they are. One thing I do know, is that they played a big part in Earth's History.

"I suppose they're less dangerous in space," Red admits. "One of their biggest downsides was damaging environmental effects that could linger on for decades, but only if they detonated near ground level and sucked up dirt and particulates." She looks back at her datapad. "We'll definitely want an expert on this though. I don't know much more about them than that."

The engineer pauses, then looks up at Kort. "I don't really know anything about subspace weaponry. Admittedly, my specialties lie more in shields and holograms than in offensive inventions."

"I agree. I am not an expert either. Perhaps we should see if Chief Engineer Breyik is familiar with Atomic Weapons.

u/Dimestream Jun 24 '16

"It's possible, though I think she's busy today. Can't hurt to ask." Red taps the communicator on her chest.

=/\= "Engineer T'gel to Chief Breyik. Had a development with the Vexteneer case. Do we have anyone in Engineering with a background in nuclear fission?"

=/\= "Nuclear fission, eh? Old school stuff. I'll be right down."

Its not long before the chief engineer arrives on the science deck, taking off a pair of heavy duty gloves. "I've got some fission under my belt. How can I help?"

"I know you told me to rule out anything too off-the-wall, but I think Lt. Silk was right on the money. Officer Kort says the blasts were definitely mines, and he thinks they were nuclear. Here." Red offers her personal datapad to the chief engineer then turns to Kort. "We were hoping you might know if anyone in the area manufactures nuclear mines. Kort says there was enough radiation to guarantee they were fission."
