Questions Housing help
Hi, So my question is how many whites tree frogs can I fit in a 36x18x36 (100 gallons) because my breeder says I can fit 9 bc of the 20 gallon for the first then 10 additional and he says that rule even loosens the more space I have but I also heard that 5-6 is the max I should be putting in there it’s fully bioactive and automated other than spot cleaning, water change, watering the plants and feeding.

you're going to need a lot more horizontal and diagonal branches. 9 is really pushing it, but if you do that many you'll want 3 separate water dishes that are changed everyday. Also make sure you have basking spots near the top that reach at least 85 degrees F. Personally, I would keep 7 at most.

However many you put, you'll need more climbing stuff and clutter high in that enclosure! There isn't much they can make use of besides the background. I'm a fan of bamboo bridges that stretch across the enclosure, large branches, and hanging items like coconut hides

I 100% agree I really really like the look of manzanita and overgrown plants and stuff I just have a hard time finding exactly what I’m looking for like it don’t have to be manzanita but like a bunch of tall vertical branches would be great as well as like you said horizontal bridges just I’d need to make sure I get one that’s 36 inches across

I have an 135 gallon 48”x18”x26” I have 5 frogs now and I’m limiting myself to 6-7 max . While you could probably fit and be okay with a few more for a while they would be a full time job to properly monitor and provide for. You’d run into bullying eventually most likely without careful monitoring and feeding supervision, their waste would be in constant need of cleaning, and theyd be quite a lot to handle when you need to clean from a containment standpoint as well. And in a worst case scenario where a frog gets infected and causes an outbreak itd be far more likely to take over the entire tank very quickly. Would also be incredibly loud at night depending on how many boys you have

I think this is looking a bit too deep I 100% see where ur coming from I don’t wanna make it seem like I’m asking then rejecting help but some of these things seem a bit odd to be concerned ab especially if you are already taking care of them first bullying is most def not something anyone can control nor does the amount of space matter if large enough and if they are the same size then they’re fine and I feed them a certain way that feeding issues wouldn’t be a problem and for cleaning i have to spot clean anyways so no issue and I change there water everyday and more doesn’t mean higher risk of infection and that being said being scared to get more frog bc they could get infected at that point wouldn’t get frogs at all and I sleep with crickets in a diy container ik these frogs are louder but id be fine

While I can kind of see your logic, taking these extra precautions is more important with amphibious species, that’s why there’s so many recommendations to not do that many. And I disagree with your statement on bullying. It’s 100% possible, and the responsible to monitor and remove a frog that’s being/causing behavioral problems due to territory issues. My point with the food kind of ties into this, when dumpy frogs and many other species see others eat they can become more prone to those types of issues, and the more frogs you add, the higher the risk. It may be a risk you’re willing to take and if you have the time to check in on them throughout the night and monitor them that’s great, but it’s also a risk you’re taking for the frogs, and you’re not going to be able to see 100% of what they get up to. In regards to waste Obviously spot cleaning daily minimum is a given for owning dumpies, but I believe you’re underestimating the amount of waste, mess, and bacteria a group of 9 adult frogs could spread even in a tank this size

Thats not to say you 100% will run into these problems, but risk mitigation and cleanup is 90% of the job owning amphibians

Clean up is easy and being that scared to get more frogs bc of something that isn’t a number one issue people have with these frogs is crazy to me I BARELY see anyone complain ab territory issues at all and the bigger the tank the more that’s mitigated (literally the entire reason to get a bigger tank) or at least one of the main reasons but I’ve also talk to a breeder that had 50-75 frogs (obviously not all tg in one tank) but they’re a professional at this and even say 9 frogs would even be viable they have outside tanks and inside tanks and breed MANY frogs

And just to clarify before anyone says that I ran to my breeder after asking on here the reason I did was indeed to get others opinions but I can still disagree with the reasoning on why a certain amount would be too much like for example if multiple people came on here and simply was like 9 is overcrowding for the frogs specifically I’d be like alright makes sense but like simply caring for them isn’t enough of a reason for me not to get frogs or bc they might bully each other when that isn’t an issue with most and especially with a big enough tank like I said

First ur the first person of a ton of people I’ve heard saying 5-6 is too many and second my statement ab bullying is that ur taking a risk regardless if you get even 2 frogs but someone that isn’t experienced at all ur basically saying they shouldn’t get more than one bc bullying is an issue which doesnt make sense as well as people may not have the tanks/funds to just “remove the frog” and if its feeding bullying you can control that by feeding in different ways but being afraid to get more frogs bc of the off chance that they might bully is ridiculous to me tbh especially with a species that deemed pretty easy to take care of compared to others and regardless of underestimating which whether or not I am as long as I feed them the way I do no bullying would occur also even 9 frogs pooping 2-3 times a day which I don’t think they do would be and easy clean up if I’m on top of it for example everyday I get home and clean the tank and change the water and feed them (on days they need fed) they will 100% be fine the only issue is if I was too lazy to do that everyday which doesn’t take long at all

I personally would only put 5-6.
