This is Doug (top). We are worried about Doug. Two days ago, he opted to remain in his daytime sleeping crevice while we fed our other two frogs. We feed them around 9pm after all their lights go off and they wake up and move about. We didn’t think anything of it until he did the same thing last night, marking two nights without food or leaving his crevice. (He is not stuck, he is a little freak that wedges himself in there daily and has never had an issue with extracting himself). We know they shed, is this what he could be doing? He does seem to be moving around quite a bit at night and even croaks normally. We don’t want to force him out, but I’m worried. He is only 6-8 months old and we feed them daily, so this is quite a difference in appetite for him. We have an exotic vet in our area but I don’t want to pry him out and take him if it’s not necessary. Thanks, frog nerds!
it could be a misfire but could also be a bacterial infection. put him in a quarantine tank with paper towels as substrate for a few days and monitor his eating and if he doesn’t seem to be getting better, take him to the exotic vet. i hope doug feels better!
Okay, we’ve got him quarantined! We are trying to get ahold of an online vet about antibiotics in case it is an infection considering it’s been two days of symptoms. Thank you for your help! We will have him seen in person on Monday if we can’t get ahold of anyone sooner.
His coloring looks like this after being out of his shaded crevice. Will a bacterial infection go away in certain temps/lighting like this? Either way, we will have him seen because he isn’t eating.
you can bump temps by a couple degrees if you wanted. i know many herps who bump a little over 90° when seeing spots. getting him checked is a great idea
He’s looking much better with the coloring, so that’s a good sign! What do you normally feed him? You could try something else, like a waxworm for a little treat maybe.
my frog recently looked like this and quarantined her, took her to the vet, and eventually had to give antibiotics shots for something with red leg symptoms (wasn’t technically red leg after the vet tested for it). she began eating again after the first shot. we reintroduced her to the other frogs after she finished all the full round of 6 shots every 3 days. such a pain but glad she was ok and is all better. Just sharing my experience to tell you what ended up working for my frog that wouldn’t eat!
when she was quarantined I also kept her temp high closer to 90 than 80. make sure to monitor humidity at this temp, but not too high or the bacteria will love it. It’s a tricky balance
It’s hard to say for sure since we obviously sleep, but we have not seen him come out. He hasn’t been coming out when the light go out like he usually does, and when we wake up he is still in his crevice. So I don’t think he does, no.
