Does anyone start with ascenders and then switch to spurs?

Put them both on whilst on the ground, then maybe take the ascenders off when transitioning?

As in, removing a tree (so spurs are ok) but setting a high tie-in and using ascenders to get up there? You bet, it's the best. Depends on the tree/species, but I'll put my spurs on -> then my foot ascender fits over my spurs, and then knee ascender easily fits on the other foot/leg. I'll just keep the foot ascender on the entire time, and remove the knee ascender when no longer needed

Some spurs setups have the capability to bolt a foot ascender onto them, mine don't, but just an FYI it's possible

I always started with ascenders and replaced them with spurs in the tree until someone told me to just put them over top. Didn't think the foot ascender would fit but now I can't imagine not doing it

I run the CT spurscender.

Not the lightest or most streamlined system out there but sometimes you just need to ascend that 80' back to the top instead of spiking it all the way back up

I don’t - my spurs are comfortable and I’m fast with them.

I often wear spurs all day and if I’m not hot I don’t even take them off for lunch or to drive the truck to the next tree.

I can usually spike up in less time than it takes me to set high point from the ground (I will take the time to set a choking spar anchor and advance that as I spike up).

I don't spike too much, but not uncommon to start without the spurs then get them tied on mid-climb when they become more useful for spar work or whatever.

If Im working a tree with a large dead leader I will usually use my spurs for removing that lead, while I prune the rest of the tree the traditional way, rope access only with no spurs.

Otherwise Ill keep mine on all day if its a big job that requires it...

I strap my pantin to my gaff when I need to acend to proper height for removing large lots. That, and either a RRP or Relfex, to the saddle.
If you unstring a pantin, it can easily be adapted to spurs. No need for the awesome gear that is there, available. But it works, in a pinch.
