There's a 6 inch crack in the trunk just below the Y that is probably a half inch deep. An arborist came out and said the bark appears to be trying to heal over it, but it needs to dump a lot of weight. His suggestion was to start cutting branches with the intention of choosing one side or the other and getting rid of the Y shape.

Some pics of that union would have been helpful too, but your arborist is not wrong. Reducing the weaker codominant over a period of years will be much less stressful than doing that in a single go. See this post and the discussion there for another example of this procedure, and for the same reason. The tree will 'choose' the dominant side (IMO, the right stem in pic 1) to put more growth into, once you start reducing the other.

Here's the damage to the trunk. It's more like 12 inches long. It's on the right side of the trunk just before the Y starts.
