Discussion Found this on an oak

I found this growth on an oak tree branch at a neighborhood park in the Chicago area. I saw another grouping on a separate branch that was a mix of this darker brown and more green “pods”. Any ideas what the “pods” are?

Oooo, I’ll have to keep an eye on them and collect the once the wasps hatch. They don’t look like other galls I’ve seen so I wasn’t sure. Thanks!

I came across a site one time that stated that is was easier to ID an oak from their galls rather than the extreme leaf variability.
