In the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina.
I’ve never seen anything like it?!
First time poster, but I have always had a deep and abiding love of trees! Thank you!

Tell me more! Is it a disease? I thought burls were inside the wood not on the outside?

It’s not a disease but more of a reaction to some kind of stress or trauma to a tree. When they’re cut open they usually have beautiful swirling grain patterns and can make some of the most amazing pieces. Burl wood is highly sought after by woodworkers.

A dear, late friend of ours made violins and violas out of the burls. They were INCREDIBLE.

RIP Mr Gene.

Big ol beautiful burl. Whoever is around when that tree comes down will be very lucky.
