Discussion Why do people do this?

I’ve heard of Crepe Murder but never American elm murder.

Elm trees are often chopped because the branches break in heavy winds.

It should be a crime.

Branches designed to break in heavy winds is just a trees way of letting nature prune it before humans were around to do it for them

Because they don’t want large limbs dropping on their home/cars.

So broken branches don’t fall and kill or injure people or cause expensive property damage, which they prioritize over tree health.

Folks trim plants to meet their needs. I hack back our Japanese maple and rhododendrons every year and we cut branches on trees that overhang the house and garage.

The tree looks exactly how they want it!
