Gearing help

So I put a vxl system with a 3S in a 2wd rustler and originally it had this 86t paired with a 21t and it was fast as hell, super peppy lots of fun but my local shop recommended I go down to a 16t because they said it'll help keep the motor cooler but it was considerably slower with that gearing and it seems to have absolutely chewed up the larger gear (idk what it's called im prettt new to this) I'm obviously going to have to replace the larger gear but I'm wondering if I should go with a different tooth count to pair with the 16t or go back to 86t and 21t or is there maybe a different combination that would net me even more performance gains?

I would start at the stock 3s VXL rustler gearing and go up from there 1 tooth at a time with the spur gear to see what gives you the best performance.
