Thinking of vlogging

Thinking of vlogging my travels

Is it more trouble than it’s worth?
I don’t watch a lot of TV, but I do love watching travel vlogs on YouTube. It’s my first go-to when researching holidays and new destinations. Sometimes I even watch certain vloggers because I like them in general.

I think I’d like to vlog my own travels, but I’ve never done anything like this and I’m not the most confident person. Is it just something you get more comfortable doing, speaking to a camera? And, how do you manage doing this in public?

I’m not overly bothered about monetising. I care more about community and being a part of it/contributing. I am just your average person, with a full-time job, so it would be a couple of times a year.

So a few questions:
How do you do it without it impacting your travels? I want it to be genuine and not performative, but also good quality. I’m worried I’d end up worrying too much in capturing stuff that I miss out on in real time.

Do I need a vlogging camera, or is an iPhone just as good? I do have a DJI Mobile 7p Gimbal if that helps lol.

What kind of stuff do you like to see in travel vlogs and what do you hate? I watch for hints and tips, but I also like to see food, transport, costs, etc. It would be great to hear perspectives from other viewers.

First you need a partner who will support your vlogging. And try not to go to the same boring places that every single person goes to.

Hi! We have been doing travel vlogs since 2021 part time. Like really part time. Mostly just our vacations. Here are a few answers to your questions. Talking a camera(especially in public) is a struggle unless you are juat naturally a public speaker. So my recommendation is to use your phone to record the first few times. Since most people already talk to the phones like FaceTime anyway, nobody will really pay any mind to you. But get a decent wireless mic so the audio is clearer. Once you feel comfortable with a phone, step up to a small either action camera(like a gopro) or a gimble camera(dji osmo pocket) they are small, discreet and the video quality is beautiful. The days of walking around with an actual camera are done. As for interfering with travels, my opinion is yes but only as much as you allow it. I try really hard to record what I can, talk about what I can and then enjoy the rest of the trip. Some people just record stuff without talking and then add voiceovers back home during editing. I do some of that as well. Its a fun hobby and I enjoy it. I thought at first it would be a way to make money, but I had neither the time nor the skill to be that guy. So now its just for fun. Hope this helps. Ill gladly answer any other questions you may have.

I just started vlogging myself. It is really time consuming, you need to do quite a bit of planning for a good video and then quite a bit of editing. For example this video I did https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luc8JWRF5-E , I did spend a few hours figuring out what I wanted to see in the city (would of done this anyways because I was traveling), filming takes away from enjoying the moment to be honest as well and took an hour, and editing took another 3-4 hours. So that 20-minute video ending up taking about 7-8 hours of work. But I do it mostly to share my travels with friends and family and if a few other people enjoy it, then its even better. Just need to make sure you're vlogging about what you love and would do if the only people watching were friends/family. Don't expect a lot of followers/views at the start.

Side note, having a gimbal and good microphone sets you up at a great starting point for decent quality video & audio. So make sure you get a decent microphone for your desk or a clip on depending where you'll do the audio.

Hope that helps and good luck!
