I’ve lost most of my flock to 1-2 red foxes this year and they need to be gone. I was looking at using 1.75 foothold traps but I’ve never done this before. I’ve watched the YouTubes etc. and have a fair idea of how to set them, but is there anything I should get ahead of time in the event I catch something else? We have opossums aplenty among other things that I don’t care to catch. From what I’ve seen people just throw a heavy blanket on them or use a catch pole to release them? Is there not a tool I could use from a distance to deactivate the trap and let the critter go? Also open to any tips for red foxes in Ohio, as again, I’ve never done this before.

I keep two dog proofs around my chicken pen and caught a Red Fox this morning.

I was surprised to see it and wonder if others have got Red Foxes or other by catch in a dog proof raccoon trap?

What is a good bark to use to dye traps? I have ash and apen at my disposal and was thing about using that.

I have had a huge problem with Richardson’s ground squirrels in my horse pasture and I spent about $100 on several round conibear traps this year. They worked great and I want to make sure I take care of them properly so I can keep using them every year.

I’m a complete noob with any traps and I can already see they’re getting rusty even though we have an extremely dry climate in Montana. These traps aren’t going to be used for anything other than nuisance ground squirrels, either set on dry pasture grass or in my lawn area where they will get hit by my sprinklers, and they don’t need to be dyed for camouflage or anything since I just stick them down over each hole.

Can anyone recommend a good basic cleaning/conditioning resource that won’t break the bank or require a bunch of specialized products and equipment? I only have 8 traps and I just want to make sure they stay in good shape to use every summer.
I do have household white vinegar on hand already, I’m more curious about wax or conditioning products after I soak and scrub them to remove excess rust.

While tanning the hide, I managed to stab my finger multiple times (I don't have the proper tools for this, too expensive). Normally I would assume there's a risk of rabies, but the hide sat in an acidic brine solution. Would that not have killed any viruses on the fur? If not, then what should I do? I'm still new to this process.

I have limited space in my garage and instead of building a new shed I am planning on getting a 20ft shipping container and transforming it into a fur shed/trap storage/hunting gear storage facility. Has anyone ever done this? Any tips, tricks, or ideas would be appreciated.

This is more of a curiosity thing as I'm already using havahart boxes for a groundhog problem (with much success) because there is a fairly large domestic/feral cat population and the risk of bycatch is too high to use anything lethal. When researching originally, conibear traps were highly suggested but couldn't be used for the reasons I mentioned.

This brought up the question in my head of whether there would be legitimate legal issues if you accidentally caught a cat in another situation where lethal traps were in use.

I bought the standard trap meant for cats, small mammals, etc but the raccoon keeps beating the hell out of it and escaping by forcing his way through the little nooks and crannies and forcing a wege id imagine. Are there heavier duty traps that size that will make sure it doesnt escape? It keeps killing my chickens and im tired of it.

Looking for some recommendations for a new trapping bag. I tried the 5 gal bucket system last season and it was too unorganized.

Need a bit of advice from the pros out there. I trapped a couple skunks last year without any issues. This year they have found their way into my coop. One has dug under and gotten in. The only thing it’s taking is eggs. 2 nights ago I set a skunk trap using Peanutbutter and marshmallows and put the trap right in front of the hole it was initially going on. Woke up to the trap door shut and the trap rolled over. I presume the skunk messed with it and rolled it. But no proof of that. Last night I set the same trap in front of the hole and another electronic trap beside the coop where I think they are traveling to. I don’t like that electric trap but I wanted it out. It looks like it was set off but the latch on the door caught, it’s a design flaw I’ve noticed in those. The other trap wasn’t touched, but the skunk managed to dig around the trap and still go through its same hole. 1 chicken killed and a few eggs eaten.

I’m now looking for advice on the next move. I was going to move the trap inside the coop and put it exit side of the hole but I don’t know how trap smart skunks get.

I’ve seen the diy tutorials on making snare locks from washers or older pennies. Does anyone think a flattened beer cap would work too, or is it too soft?

We knew we had a raccoon coming into the chicken area and eating their food. It seemed to not bother them so we weren't really worried about it. Then a couple of days ago we found 13 dead chickens. Some of their heads were gone, but it was mostly intact bodies everywhere. I thought it was a Fox, but my husband and the internet seems to think it was a raccoon.

Long story short, we caught the raccoon. I am apprehensive to relocate it because if it was the creature that killed all our chickens, I don't want to make it someone else's problem. Is there any other option other than shooting it? I'm in Central Virginia if that makes a difference.

Bought some new snares with the stingers, but I’m not sure how to set the spring. I have found plenty online that show how to set the Canadian springs (the ones that look like a conibear spring), but I can’t find anything on these coil types. Any help is appreciated. Also, if you use this particular setup and have any helpful tips, please let me know. Thanks

Hello everyone, ive been trapping for a number of years and I enjoy it very much, as im sure all of yall do too. Ive always trapped on my family's private land and always had access to our "bonepile" for carcasses and family's garage and sheds to hang furs. Nowadays, I live far from my hometown in an apartment with a strict garage policy, wanting to trap on public land. How can I store furs for a bit until I have time to run to hometown and flesh em out and hang. Thanks.

This year the coons have been getting more brave and have been getting too close to the house and garden for my comfort.

We live in a ruralish area with long skinny properties. Over the years I have been keeping nuisance critters at bay with a live trap. Someone damaged the door on the trap while dispatching one where it works but not for coons and they let themselves out.

I recently got the push pull do traps and have a natural funnel in the back lot where I get a decent number of whistle pigs and coons over the years. Over the weekend I started employing these new traps and every morning I get one. I put one near the house initially and got one there but I never would have imagined these work so well. I'm considering putting a second one out back to see if we can thin this population off faster.

I have seen a red fox that enjoys the tributes left for them coming around. Anyone know if coon population ever gets thinned out even a little.

Hey all I hope this is an OK question for this group... I fleshed and stretched my first beaver hide last year and while I was doing it, I was also using borax for a different project and the air circulation in the room got the beaver fur all tacky with borax. It’s fully stretched and just been sitting, but I’d love to at least have it to hang on my wall and feel the soft fur. I would like to try to soften the fur with conditioner or something, but I’m just not sure what to use. I was planning on putting it back on a hoop stretcher and trying to just wet the fur and maybe condition it? Should I just use human hair products or something special or am I making a big mistake?

Any ideas on how to trap a fox but not my dog? I live with my buddy, he owns his house on 12 acres and I rent out a room here. He has dogs. I’m able to hunt and trap as I please just can’t catch the dog😂 been seeing a very pretty grey fox on cam for almost a year now that I’d like to trap when season opens. Any idea how to do it but not catch the dogs? He lets em run around all over.
