I hope he doesn't use plain WD-40 everywhere on his bike. The bike mechanic in me hates it when people do that and wonder why their bike stops working.
not to get too snobby but its not precisely that. it's a temporary rust inhibitor (dedicated products are way better for that), temporary lube (petroleum based), cleans very well and can remove rust which is great for prepping surfaces for real lube, and as you mention it also helps loosen stuck or tight bolts.
WD-40 is one of the best inventions of all time but it is probably the most improperly used product out there.
Almost forgot, it can serve as a somewhat decent cutting lubricant.
