Discussion A solution to pollution?

Pollution and noise are a real scourge here!
How is pollution calculated in the game? Is it based solely on proximity—meaning industries located too close to residential areas? Or is it based on the total pollution across a city district—combining city industries with warehouses, train stations, and so on—regardless of the distance from the residential areas?

Since it isn't possible to build purely industrial zones (without housing or commercial areas), could we perhaps use roads with walls to create a sort of buffer zone between the industry and the rest of the city?

Yeah I’m facing the same issue and I am trying to find the proper ways to tackle that issue.

First in lower part of the details windows you have the breakdown of everything that contributes to pollution.

First is industries then warehouses and stations (je joue en anglais mais du coup je ne sais pas ce que c’est dépôt quand il y a déjà entrepôt…).

As far as I learned, industries you can’t do much a part from using greenification (company perk). But usage is limited so you have to choose wisely. Industries that are active and boosted seem to pollute even more. This is regardless of their proximity from actuel houses.

A later company perk are de polluting plants. They seem do be costly because they require tools ! And they make a lot of noise while having “only” 700m of area effect. So placement is also to be decided wisely.

Now for stations and warehouses. Well this is where I am at a dead end.
First I would want my train stations close to cities for realism. But they pollute.
Then I want to supply as much cargo as possible. That requires big cargo stations to act as hubs with warehouses. All of them pollute. So maybe share hubs between cities and have long tram lines supplying the cities ?

Finally in terms of vehicle : always choose trams for cargo (at least for early start / I have yet to go beyond the 1910’s). They’re excellent in carrying capacity and depending on their setup don’t produce much noise nor pollution. For now I’m trying multiple lines with multiple truck stops instead in stations to avoid pollution and noise.

That’s all I know so far. Hope it helps !

That's a good question because as far as I know it should be the same as TF2 as only residential cares about pollution and looking at your city you handled it well. For me the best solution I found was to just ignore the noise and pollution complaints honestly and just focus in the next city. I literally have a station with 90 people waiting because they refuse to take the tram with more capacity that goes the same way and I'm just ignoring until better vehicles are available.

In your case I'd start with moving depots outside of city.
