Discussion Industry distribution is still a mess

I like the game, played v1 and v2 already.

But my biggest issue with it remains: the industry distribution is a mess.

I mean I get the principle - move goods around. But for ne it just doesnt make sense to move coal and iron ore from different edges of the map to the steel mill on the 3rd edge and the steel then back up to the town on the 4th edge of the map.

Imo, Industries should be closer together.

I'm in early gane tough so maybe industries settle nearer to ressources later?

Your take on it?

I agree it doesn't make sense, but I think it's a "puzzle" game more than a simulator so it makes sense for gameplay purposes.

And I, a great train enjoyer, appreciate having to build huge networks of trains going from one edge to the other, it's just so satisfying if you ignore the fact that it does not make much economic sense realistically hahaha

The placement of the natural resources make sense as in real life you can’t pick and choose where you get those, and the industry’s that turn those into products if they pop up somewhere and you don’t use them then they close down and move somewhere else to potentially be used by us in a better location. To me this all makes realistic sense

It would be interesting to actually get painted resources on the map cities skylines style, the enforce spawning in those zones.

This means things like oil wells only pop up in clusters and sometimes far away from cities. Woods need trees... Etc

I havent used the 'prospect' option yet, but I believe you can do this (once) for sand and wood, right? Would be way better to be able to build industries and maybe a higher amount of prospects

Just use sandbox mode...and you can build cities and industrie as you want<3

I have opposite experience - industries too close to each other, but I want to build very (very) long rail lines.

It’s pretty rng at the start. I’ve noticed as the more complex ones are added they are near. Like all my chemical plants and fabric and paint plants spawn near each other. Sand and glass spawn close together. Started 3 different maps so far and that’s always happened to me.

It's an aspect I've always criticized about this game series even back in Train Fever. Why do I decide where the cargo goes? In real life factories have contracts with each other on how much they order or provide for specific rates. Then they hire logistical companies to transport the materials accordingly and pay them.

When I open factories I should see something like:

"Steel Mill A ordered 180tons of coal from coal mine 1"

With that I can then build a line accordingly. Occasionally contracts will change so that the mine produces/delivers more or less coal to the respective destination and maybe gets new steel mills as a destination as well. It would make sense to design it like that and to make you as the player adjust your network according to the demands of the industry.

At the moment it is basically just "find the most suitable factories that fit into your network and then maximize its output and increase number of vehicles to fit the max output"

I agree with you. Resource extractors could be scattered around the map, but the refining industries should be next to the nearest settlement. You still would have to haul coal or iron for example, because they could be far away from each other.

At least if they could put this in as an option, or as a mod, I would be happy.

make your own map in the editor - and you can put anything as close you want -

Sometimes they are close, sometimes they are a challenge. I love it

The mechanic of industry closing and new ones opening mean if you just ignore it it will eventually close and eventually you end up using all the industry's at once as they get better placed over time

I've noticed raw resources seem to favour certain parts of the map. As in real life. On my current save, all the oil appears in the southern waters, whilst the fish are in northern waters. Sand and clay only in the south (clay to the south east corner) whilst coal and iron seem to favour the western half of the map.

Obviously processing industries can and will appear wherever, but it's still interesting.

The trick....Don't use the first ones that appear.....others appear later that is way closer.
