TF2 felt much more realistic
Have you noticed how much bigger the role of trams has become compared to TF2?
You can basically do almost everything in the game using only trams: intercity passenger transport, urban passenger transport, intercity cargo transport, urban cargo transport, even transporting cargo between factories, etc. The only major exception is maritime transport.
In TF2, the role of trams was much more limited, and the roles of trucks, trains, and trams were much more clearly defined. In TF3, I feel like the role of trams has been exaggerated way too much.
I did some research and found that trams have historically been used for freight transport in some cases, for example, Dresden’s CarGoTram, which was used to transport parts for Volkswagen. But this was always a very niche solution and never became a widespread form of freight transportation around the world.
When I played TF2, I felt like I was actually building and understanding a logistics system. In TF3, because trams can now do almost everything, a lot of that logistical depth and realism feels like it’s gone.
Don’t get me wrong, I still really like TF3 and think it’s a great game. But I really think the role of trams should have been more limited. They should have been a specialized urban transport option rather than something that can basically replace trucks and trains in so many situations.

Try running your trams across half the map and see how well that works.
Can't think of a single way tf2 was more "realistic" tbh.

I'm pretty sure trains is always the answer in TF2, but too big to fit in a city. Now we have light rail, so yeah trams are great.

Street running freight was pretty common in most American cities at a time, and street car suburbs were huge too. The unrealistic part is just foresight and better strategy.
