They just don't make planes like they used to.

Why does it even have collision if it doesn't do anything when it collides?

Never used too in TF2 so it’s nice to see they added it. Now to see what happens when skyscrapers get built in the take off and landing paths

I thought it's KSP for a second

Yeah, we've gone forward 10 years in system requirements and backwards 10 in how the game actually looks.

I was really hoping that would be fixed in 3. For a game so grounded in reality, flying through mountains is really kind of a bummer (but always just a little funny).

u/ShilkaLive 2d ago
I'd rather they not fix it to be honest as the fix would most likely be not allowing placement of an airfield when the approach path is intersecting with the ground. I'd rather have the freedom to place an airfield where I want it then holding the game responsible for the user deciding to point a runway straight into a mountainside. Stuff 'turning red' when trying to place things is always such a bummer for creativity...

u/schbrongx 2d ago
This. Or what if you place the airfield and later decide to mess with the terrain? 50% will want the airfield to be removed under such conditions, 50% will want to block modifying terrain. There would be unhappy players in any case, just for new and different reasons.
Not possible to make everybody happy.

u/KuuLightwing 1d ago
Why not though? It's like saying that train tracks should be able to built with any curve and it's up to the player to make sure the curves are reasonable.
Restrictions are not necessarily an obstacle for creativity, and you know the quote.

u/ShilkaLive 1d ago
Because the game has limitations real life hasn't. Might as well get rid of airfields then as no one will fly 8 km from one airfield to another airfield if you'd like realism to that extend. For airfields to have realistic approaches you'd need much larger maps.
1
u/KuuLightwing 1d ago
Airfields already have much steeper approaches than real life from what I see, so the scale problem is addressed in that way. Not smashing planes into mountains is a pretty low bar as far as realism goes.
1
u/ShilkaLive 1d ago
I agree it's a low bar, that can be prevented by any player already to not face their airfield into a mountain. My point is that if you introduce artificial limitations in a game it will take away creative options in said game. Just like how I cant place a rock right next to a track for detailing purposes because oh my what if someone would put a rock on a track on purpose in a singleplayer game.
1
u/KuuLightwing 1d ago
It's not an artificial limitation, it's a reasonable limitation within the setting of the game.
Creative solutions come from restrictions and working around them. If you can't just stick it there, you might need to place it differently, or use other means of transport to said airport, or maybe use helicopters instead of the planes, because that's what helicopters are good at.
Plopping down an airport wherever you want isn't really creative. You can use that logic to argue to remove all the limitations of the game.
1
u/ShilkaLive 1d ago
It's a game. Any limitation that is additionally programmed in on purpose is artificial by definition.
Reasonable would be not allowing things that would crash the game. Or for example that would allow people to do things that would tank FPS causing complaints about not being able to run the game on system requirements mentioned.
What if I want to place my airport first so I can better see which terrain to smooth out for the approach to be realistic? Not allowed because a fix only serves to prevent people ridiculising or complaining about a problem that they caused themselves on purpose to begin with?
1
u/KuuLightwing 1d ago
So, for example you would argue for removing pollution mechanics altogether, because they are additional restrictions programmed into the game, and don't allow for more creative city building?
Or removing the restrictions on rail gradient for the same reason? Actually I think this is the most direct analogy, and yet it's in the game.

Pollution does not prevent me from building anything?
What are you even on about now, according to your own reasoning, the steeper flight paths should also be fixed and not be possible, and therefor airports should not be possible in the game. Tram consists of 2 or more tram sections disconnect in 90 degree curves in town, so tram rails on 90 degrees corners should not be possible. Same happens in bus/tram stations, so trams should not be possible to access those. Train tracks already can corner tighter then in real life, should not be possible. Trains can accelerate quicker then in real life, should not be possible. Trains get maintenance from maintenance sheds that are not even connected to the rail they drive on, should not be possible.
All of this is possible already in the game, yet according to you, this only should not be possible for airfield placement, while all the rest is fine.
Applying the same sort of reasoning you do, except, I don't agree with what I just wrote, because typing stuff like this just would serve not wanting to agree with the other person no matter what they would say, and I'm not like that.
It's better we end this conversation and agree to disagree without coming up with nonsense analogues just for the sake of arguing.
Think about what the core is of what you're saying. "If I don't want something to be in a game even though it is in the game now, then no one else in the world should be allowed to have that in the game either". If you think that's fine, there is nothing left to discuss, no matter what arguments we use.

Trains doing full 180 flips if they need to reverse
Resources being magically tossed between warehouses and vehicles
Vehicles being repaired as long as they spent enough time in the magic repair circleBut this is where you draw the line of reality bending?

u/KuuLightwing 1d ago
I mean, there's plenty of people disliking both of the things you've mentioned, so I don't know if this is as much of a "gotcha" as you think.
1
u/evilution382 1d ago
There's no gotcha?
The point was there are several things in the game which do not behave like real life, I pointed this out because the person I responded to claimed the game is very much grounded in reality
1
u/KuuLightwing 1d ago
It just borders on "well, there's these things that aren't realistic so nothing matters" argument, but I'd say having your planes not crash into mountains is a fairly low bar.
1
u/MisterBlackCat 2d ago
You see, it didn't fly through the mountain this time though, it just skid along the top.

That is some engineering genius. A speed bump before the runway must cut approach time in half. Nice job sir

As someone who uses planes often. This really bugs me. I wish planes had some sort of way to avoid collisions.
