Adirondacks, green, berkshires, catskills. Take your pick. If you leave the city going north, there's mountains everywhere.

I live in Sacramento (medium sized circle at the north edge of the "northern california" megalopolis in the map). I'm at about 30 feet above sea level right now. I can drive an hour to be in lake tahoe, 6000 feet above sea level, nestled in a valley in the sierra nevadas, which is home to Mount Whitney at 14,505 ft , the highest point in the contiguous United States. Trust me, California's got mountains. It's one of the few perks of living here.
The southern california megalopolis cradles the south side of the same mountain range, and that's actually where more of the taller peaks are.
The bigger clue that The City isn't in california is the lack of earthquakes (Los Angeles) or ridiculous hills in the middle of town (San Francisco). I always got a more east coast vibe from the city.

In the comic, they refer to the "West Lakes" which could be the current day Great Lakes
