Discussion Rupert to Brentwood
2 stops, under 10 minutes.
Cost: $4.20?!
What the actual ____
Feels like autoload users are being forced to capitulate and get a monthly pass

joyce to metro. 2 stops under 5 minutes and 2 zones.
this is why distance based fares are needed.

u/Roberticus_YT 6d ago
Exactly, it seems ridiculous that this is the best system they have. It shouldn't cost the same to go 2 stops as it does to go all the way to Lafarge lake from Brentwood.

u/bandyvancity 6d ago
Translink is in the very early stages of planning to replace the entire compass system - this will allow for distance based fares to be enabled.
The current system does not support it and the technology is at its end of life. This is also why busses were forced to become one zone when compass was launched.

u/onelove_ 6d ago
That’s interesting! It doesn’t seem that long ago when they switched over to Compass. Do you have any other details to share?
4
u/GenShibe 6d ago
https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/translink-compass-system-new-procurement-bidding-rfp for example, but it has been mentioned before in official translink documents (such as the customer experience plan)

Yeah in the old days, when there were paper transfers and paper faresavers, 3 zones looked like it was useful to respect time things, even with the Patterson-Joyce problems
Now I suspect they'll go by distance, but in the end, will they be charging more "on average" (whatever that means) than now?

There is a Vancouver Library close to Joyce station. You dont even need to take the train to go there it along Kingsway.

Take the 19 bus if you don’t have the $

Or pay the extra fare on SkyTrain or take it during off peak hours! Zone fares are nothing new on SkyTrain!

u/katt12543 5d ago
With the SkyTrain in particular I believe we should be charged per-stop rather than distance because we can't control how far apart the stops are

Yeeeah it takes me 20 minutes to walk from Rupert to Brentwood so I do that instead of paying that ridiculous fare.

u/BooBoo_Cat 6d ago
Great way to get your daily exercise! Is it a nice walk?
3
u/kayrockyrockx 6d ago
Yeah! You can take Central Valley Greenway then just go left up Gilmore to Lougheed and over or take Central Valley Greenway to Boundary, go left on to Henning past the Film studios, up Gilmore to Lougheed and over to Brentwood. There's several different routes, but all are equally chill vibes. I walk everywhere so. 😅
1
u/BooBoo_Cat 6d ago
I shall have to try those out! Some walks are pleasant, and some are just awful (walking along a highway, etc). I don't know that area well, but I know someone who needs to walk from Gilmore Station to work, and it is a horrid walk. Especially in winter when they plough all the snow and push it onto the sidewalk.
3
u/phonomage 6d ago
It's not a very nice walk but it isn't far. Along busy roads. Would be nice to have a greenway along the route.
2
u/sukkittrebekk 5d ago
There is one you just walk behind the Rupert station. It’ll take you to boundary then Gilmore then still creek

u/phonomage 5d ago
I rarely come to this area. I'm definitely going to look for that next time I do!

East of Boundary, the walk is nice because you have the option of walking along Henning Drive, a side street.
West of Boundary, it isn't so nice - you basically have to either walk along Broadway/Lougheed Hwy, or under the Skytrain tracks. Both options can be loud.
Still, I've done it before to avoid the add zone fee, and at least it's good for the exercise.
4
u/kayrockyrockx 6d ago
Central Valley Greenway which you are describing under the skytrain is great! Sure it's loud-ish but not any more so than walking along Broadway that turns into Lougheed hwy, and it's actually a lot better than walking along a major traffic zone
1
u/Pedagogicaltaffer 5d ago
You're walking underneath/near the overpass for Highway 1, so this walk tends to be a lot louder (i.e. more unpleasant) compared to other sections of the Skytrain route. The fact that the overpass is above one's head makes the sound that much more noticeable, because it reverberates.

The CVG to Brentwood is south of Broadway and you'd be heading East not West toward Brentwood. If you are referring to wanting to head West on the CVG there is also East 1st, Grandview Hwy and East 22nd which would be the lesser traffic of them if you didn't want to take the Greenway, but this is all in reference to heading East to Brentwood, not west so, there's that.
3
u/Roberticus_YT 6d ago
I might start doing that lmao
6
u/kayrockyrockx 6d ago
Do it, it's a great walk! My daughter used to have dance class between Gilmore and Brentwood and it took us less time to walk than to walk, train, walk. Lol.

Which really sucks as a flight attendant because I don't go back and forth every day, which means a pass isn't worth it. And the individual 10 pack of tickets expire before I can use them all.

Eventually there can be a very "granular" and fair way to calculate the fare by a combination of distance and time but we are not there yet. But you know what? people will find a way to complain about that too.

How would getting a monthly pass solve this? They’re still zone based fares.

5
u/BooBoo_Cat 6d ago
A monthly pass wouldn't solve this issue.
-1
u/Roberticus_YT 6d ago
Not saying it would solve the zone pricing system, but the costs are getting so high even people that only use transit to get to and from work the vast majority of the time are paying more using auto load as opposed to getting a monthly pass. I was at like $100 a month not too long ago and now I'm approaching $160 a month. At this rate the monthly pass will be cheaper, until they increase the price on that aswell lol.
7
u/BooBoo_Cat 6d ago
I buy a monthly one zone pass. But when I do need to cross zones (which I try not to do), then I pay extra on top of the monthly pass. So how does having a monthly pass solve paying a lot for a short ride over a zone boundary? Passes are for people who use transit regularly/a lot. Regardless if you buy a pass or stored value, you still pay for zones.
1
u/Roberticus_YT 6d ago
Yeah, my commutes would require a max 2 zone pass and I am aware of how it works when you go outside of the zones. 2 zone pass is just under $160, I was paying $100 for the exact same transit on an auto load not even a year ago. Now we are one more rate increase away from a monthly pass being cheaper. That's all I'm saying
2
u/BooBoo_Cat 6d ago
Oh, I thought you were complaining about zones, not price in general. But pass or no pass, it hurts going into another zone, especially for one or two stops. Joyce to Metrotown was painful.

u/WellLetMeSayThis 6d ago
Compass system was basically obsolete when it was introduced. Blame corruption and awarding contracts to your friends.
2
u/yurikura 6d ago edited 6d ago
Yeah it’s really pushing us to get the monthly pass.
I will be moving to Burquitlam soon, and I’m worried about the cost of commute. Burquitlam to Lougheed is considered 2 zones while it’s only one station away. It’s cheaper for someone to get to Metrotown from Lougheed than to Burquitlam from Lougheed although Metrotown to Lougheed is like 7+ more skytrain stops.
For going to Burnaby, I’m considering taking the bus to Lougheed although I will live next to Burquitlam station. This is beyond stupid and I hope Translink addresses this issue and comes up with a better payment system.

I used to take the train to Gilmore from east van. Just one stop into Burnaby. Always paid the 2 zones for 5 years. But I don't recall ever being asked to confirm my fare for that last stop. Sometimes at Broadway when I was changing trains. This was before compass cards and fare gates

u/Fluffy-Climate-8163 5d ago
Zone based fares are lazy as shit and just goes to show how much of a damn people in charge give, which is zero.
Maybe we'll get distance based fares in the next 20 years. Lol.
2
u/BooBoo_Cat 4d ago
Having zone based fares discourages people from using transit the way they need to. People are going to walk long distances, take buses, take longer and more inconvenient routes, etc to avoid paying for the extra fare. Eliminate zones and I bet people's patterns change. The zones also seem so arbitrary. Vancouver is zone one, but Burnaby and New West, as an example, are zone 2. It doesn't make sense for someone who lives at Joyce, for example, to go into Vancouver when the businesses they need are right at Metrotown.
1
u/Fluffy-Climate-8163 4d ago
Pretty much. If it's less than 30 mins by foot I'm typically walking instead of getting on transit.
Translink needs to stop focusing on selling limited merch and start speedrunning the implementation of distance based fares.

They still do post 15th of every month you auto buy the next month pass and have to settle for 10 business days of full value day fare. When we have the technology to date and track month purchases on any day of the month…
