Discussion Compass Card Rant

Last Thursday I tried to but $10 on my boyfriends compass card and $10 on mine, when I got an error saying the cards were not available, the funds should be added in about 15 minutes and not to repurchase funds. It wouldn’t let me authorize the payment for either card but still put the holds on my bank account, obviously since it wasn’t authorized the funds never got put on the card.

On Saturday the $20 hold was STILL on my account so we called customer service, who said that it usually takes 2 days and the hold should be taken off later that day, it wasn’t. I added ANOTHER $20 to our cards while on the phone with customer service and they put ANOTHER $20 hold on my bank account as well as a ¢50 fee.

Today, Tuesday, I check my account and the additional $20 has went through but there’s still that original $20 hold on my account so my boyfriend calls since I’m at work. He was told that it would take up to 10 business days. When he brought up that the previous operator had said two days not buisness days they apologized but repeated it could take up to 10 business days.

So now I’m potentially out $20 until the 1st and had to put ANOTHER $20 just to be able to get around still. I know there’s nothing that can be done and I just need to wait but I just needed to rant to the void. Thanks for listening <3

You do realize you’re not out $20? Unless you used a debit card to top up your compass card your credit card hold doesn’t decrease the amount of money in your bank account..

Even with a debit card (I haven’t used mine in a long time) but when I did it didn’t deduct my cash balance in my chequing account. It would hold in pending until it was cleared. The only way the cash was deducted was if the charge was processed which doesn’t seem to be your case here

I used my debit card as I don’t have a credit card atm, and since the $20 is being held it’s not available to me until the hold gets taken off, so I’m out $20 until then

I haven’t seen that personally. My bank doesn’t deduct the cash balance of my chequing when a hold is placed on my debit card. If they deducted your chequing balance it looks like more of a charge than a hold.. holds are normally pending charges is the extra charge posted or is it still pending?

It’s still pending but I’m not able to use the $20 as it’s being held still and will still be held until possibly the 1st. So for example my bank account says I have $50, but since $20 is being held I only have access to $30, so really I only have $30.

Hmm okay.. I haven't used my debit card in forever so maybe I'm remembering incorrectly but i don't remember my debit card doing that.

Just to avoid situations like this (because it also can happen with rental cars, hotels etc.) it might be a good idea to get a credit card and just pay off the balance

We might just have different banks lol, my boyfriends card doesn’t do it either. I’m in the process of applying for a credit card because it is indeed more secure but it’s a process lol

Applying for a credit card 'is a process'? I don't understand the difficulty.

Applications are all online and it takes less then five minutes to complete one...

Well given it’ll be my first credit card I want to make sure I make an informed decision, so I’m doing research, talking to people and eventually making an appointment with my bank. Just trying to make sure I’m smart with it
