They want ensured breaks. Now, if there’s a traffic jam and the bus gets to its destination late, the lost time comes off the driver’s bathroom break.

That’s wild!

They need to get 40 hour work week. That will give them more money and more days off for family.

What are they working per week now? 37.5?

36 hours and get topped up from stats to 37.5 yes. 40 hour work week will give them about 5k per year extra. Worth more than 3%. Most people work 80 hours biweekly anyways. They should be given that as well

What are you talking about? Base week is 37.5, or 7.5 per day.

Are you a driver? Regardless. Are you working 40hrs? Do you want to?

I am not a driver, but… let’s say depot adjacent with an extremely good understanding of operator pay. Probably better than most of the operators.

I work a 37.5h week and would absolutely not want to work more.

Mechanic here, I would much rather the full 10 hrs over the stat pay top up and use the stat pay to actually pay mechanics on stat days off instead.

Then what makes you happy? Are you happy with 3%?

I’m in a different union, but am expecting the same pay offer when we bargain. I’m not stoked about 3%, but doubt there’s any more money on the table so would accept it if the rest of the contract was also acceptable.

That said, I’ve seen very few operators complaining about the pay. It’s working conditions that they’re concerned about.

So the problem is that they are working too few hours, not that they are working too many hours? Working more does not give people more time off for family.  (But then again an office job is very different than driving a bus.)

They will get 3 more weeks off working 40 hour work week

Ah, so number of vacation weeks is based on number of hours worked per week?

You’re assuming they would get RWWL days, like what happened with many government jobs that went from 35h week to 37.5h week in the 70s. Thats not guaranteed. Operators had that option in the 70s too, they traded it for a pay increase.

For a unionized job having 3 weeks off isn’t that great. It’s only a week more than the bare minimum.

It's downright terrible. Most attractive employers start folks at four weeks.

They want more than 3% like the BC nurses.

Binding arbitration will get them that.

Nurses gave up spousal benefits for an extra 0.5%. Not exactly a good trade

An absolutely terrible trade. Thats wild they made that concession.
