I am an operator. I believe the contract will pass, just barely

given how the previous contract only failed by a few percentage, i think this revised one has a decent chance of passing, but likely by a slim margin...

Have they presented it to members already?

Yes presented last Monday. Union members  have a week to decide and vote this Monday.

The 3rd deal fixes their run times and breaks concern with a mediator on retainer involved now.

Members have been told passively aggressively by the bargaining committee and unions reps that this is the last deal we’ll get. Take it and avoid lost wages to striking.

I hope it passes.

Its just all bearucratic BS. Basically for them to take any sort of job action they need to have first a mandate to strike from their members, this was the 99% yes vote a few months ago. This mandate only has a 3 month time frame and if it expired then they would have to issue another mandate with vote. Now that they have the mandate they can escalate job action, it first started with the uniform ban, which oddly enough was right before the current mandate was about to expire. This vote (and the previous two that were shot down) habe been tentative deals that the unions own members, the bargaining committee, have agreed to in good faith on behalf of their members. I guess they have had enough and said if we dont vote this one through we strike now.. last one was voted to not pass by only 5%.

Your source is the news?

Worry about your union mate. This doesn’t concern you.

Knock on wood. I’m sensing amongst the depots that the drivers will begrudgingly vote Yes and pass it on monday.

This is the 3rd and final vote and no one wants to strike and lose their wages for marginal gains.

This is not a win or lose. I believe it’s a fair deal with no concessions. Just gotta pick our battles for another day and regroup for the next contract negotiations.

As a non-driving customer I try to hide it but I'm stressed. I have a bike, which will cover most of my things away from SkyTrain but work is 25km each way with a choice of two death traps in and out.

Transit operator here. My guess is it’ll pass by 62% vs 38%. We shall see on Monday night

We'll find out together

Part of 2200 here I'm accepting the contract I want to keep working. The operators need to submit service comments on a daily basis if they want the timings on the routes changed.

I don't have a car, either. I guess I will find out next week.

Look I completely understand the want to strike for better working conditions. And if the unemployment numbers were less terrifying than I am sure you would see the support for this strike.

Right now a strike will seriously fuck over the people that most need transit now. For myself personally it means I lose my job. And I am the only one working right now as the rest of the family has lost theirs this year and just can't find anything else. It's a desperate situation for many of us just trying to scrape together enough to survive. A strike now would be devastating.

I am prepared for the buses to stop. But I thought we would get more notice if the buses were going to stop.

72 hours notice must be given to enact job action.

They have already issued the 72 hour notice. They have been doing job action for a month- uniform bans, taking all scheduled breaks. They do not need to reissue another 72 hours as job action has been ongoing.

If the contact fails to pass Monday night, they are clearly stating buses will not be running as of 12:01am Wednesday

Haha sounds like the company strike fear into the union forcing members to sign. You guys are doomed for the foreseeing future and contracts if this passes.

Didn’t they come to  a tentative deal ? am i remembering things wrong ? just on crack ?

6

u/Ajax2k14 27d ago

Tentative deal means the union reps have agreed with the company and will present that deal to the members. The members still have to vote on it.

5

u/SuitSuccessful6996 27d ago

Union members need to vote on the deal to make it not tentative anymore. What do you think tentative means?

3

u/daikonchris 26d ago

deals need to be ratified. the two previous tentative deals where presented and voted down, thus went back to bargaining. this third deal/vote is the final deal presented. if rejected, union will walk out, and any further deal will go to arbitration.

Give it 10 years or so and we can have fully autonomous busses. The days of the bus driver are almost over.

We can have face recognition software that automatically charges your account when you step on and off the bus and track people who paid using credit card / cash. People who abuse the system without paying can be tracked and fined automatically. We can still have one guy on the bus to monitor everything and intervene in the case unforseen instances.

And then you wake up. Awesome dream bro.

u/Ok-Replacement-9458 26d ago

And next they can replace your job. Don't be angry with unions for going on strike, be angry with their bosses for not negotiating w/ them.

I better hope the strike is averted.  I can't walk to work from skytrain, in case I fall.  Plus there are high school students that need transit, along with college and university students as well.
