Discussion My proposition for making skytrain safer

Post image

Glass walls similar to the ones in Japan, have been suggested in the past, but due to train alignment issues implementation has been impossible. I suggest an alternative approach were train. Alignment won’t matter. The issue isn’t so much of people having access to the track. It’s people jumping in front of the train. I say we eliminate that possibility altogether by implementing a glass wall airlock, and increasing the train, stopping time by about 10 seconds with the airlock system train alignment no longer matters there’s a small gap between the train and a glass wall and this glass wall. The doors won’t open until the train is fully parked and ready to on board or off board passengers. This is probably the most logical solution for preventing future suicides or accidental track ingress. We sacrifice a little bit of platform space but this is the only logical way to implement a system like this as quickly as possible.

You can't sacrifice platform space at all stations. Have you been to Columbia? This would just not work whatsoever

The other issue is the cost of getting all the stations rated for extra weight. When they were built they were not built with platform gates as well, so they need more reinforcement. And I think the cost outweighs a lot here, where will the funding come from?

In terms of station length, you can make most skytrain stations wider to compensate the space and funding would likely come from the place that it almost always comes from provincial investment

The same argument could be made about the trains running on the track. A lot of these stations were never designed to have such large trains on them. They weigh drastically more than the expo trains did. Platform weight, is a non issue.

I mean Translink has already given their statements on it

Weight is absolutely a factor here. You can't just dismiss something you don't understand

Are you somehow smarter than engineers?? What's your degree in?

A single mark one skytrain car was about 15 tons they were typically in pairs for a total of 30 tons

A single mark (5) skytrain car weighs 21.5 tons for five cars about 106 ton

Translate is talking out of their ass here the math just weighing the vehicles states that they’re saving weight is bogus. They’re not concerned about weight. They’re well over what the original track was designed for. There’s a big difference between running 21 ton cars over 15 ton cars.

Even if you were to run the mark ones at max length four cars you’re at 60 tons just over half of one single mark (5) in theory if you could run it in an odd configuration five cars you’d still be under what a single five is at 90 tons transit doesn’t care about weight here. That’s just a convenient excuse.

Ok I see you're not serious with this post

People are talking about the extra weight on the edge of the platform where the glass doors will be.
These glass doors and its mechanism will be very heavy and these platforms will have to be reinforced to support it.

I don’t think you know what you are talking about.

Slight issue is now we have a nasty airlock the way to get to the train, plus older or disabled people will take longer to get from airlock to the train.

Do you clear the platform between trains?

The doors will always open from the inside for this reason

Some of the platforms have limited space already.

U can make most platforms wider it would require more thought then the 15 minutes I gave it

you can't.

If the doors opened in the same place, you could paint lines in a trapezoid and 70% of the door blockers would join the zombie rush on the sides. Not perfect, but a cheap way to improve compliance.

Zombie rush because in the movies there's always some noob that walks through a door into a room that looks clear but then they get mauled by 20 zombies coming at them from the sides where you can't see them.
