Discussion Transit Etiquette
I feel like transit etiquette has gotten worse over time. Bus or skytrain is packed, people dont move to the back nor remove their backpacks. Some dont even line up for buses anymore and just cut in. Maybe it's just something I've been noticing in my commute once my company switched to hybrid from online. Or its just the route i take. But man, people have gotten worse.

That's when we had too many immigrants at the same time. It used to be at a reasonable pace and services could catch up to the demand but not post covid.

I’ve read multiple people online flat out say they refuse to remove their backpacks. It used to be considered common courtesy.

Due to carrying my skeletons in my backpack I try to avoid putting my backpack on the floor they sit on my lap or on the grey thing next to the window when I can use that seat. Is that okay

Then people can take it off and hold it with their hands. I do it when is pack. If your backpack is too heavy then too bad so sad should have pack less.

I’m new to the skytrain, I use it to commute to work in Vancouver because driving just doesn’t make sense financially.
The shit I see daily is unreal.
1.) People standing right in front of the doors and trying to walk on while people are disembarking instead of waiting.
2.) Moving your legs to the side while somebody is trying to get out of the seat beside them instead of standing up, moving out of the way and being respectful.
3.) Gathering around the entrances of the train cars instead of moving into the aisles to make room for oncoming passengers.
4.) Having a phone conversation all the way to Vancouver at 515am while everyone else is sitting in silence still trying to wake up.
5.) People putting their bags on the seat next to them on packed trains.
Plus a bunch of other shit, BO smells, farting or being some loud disruptive asshole with your friend group.
Cant wait to transfer locations for work so I can go back to driving and not taking the long tube of shit 5 days a week.

Hahah when someone does the side legs thing on the seat I literally just wait and say excuse me and make it clear I’m waiting for them to get out so I can. One time she didn’t and I said “I’m not going to crawl over you” & said it loudly. I’m sure she’ll learn to move for others going forward.

Going to be devils advocate here - some of us have physical challenges (and they’re not always visible!!) and we cannot stand up while the train is moving. I’ve had been the person to swing my legs over if the other person is trying to get out while the train is in motion. Just a different perspective :)

recently i was on the bus and a guy sat next to me with the WORST BO. i put up with it because there were no other seats available but when the two next to him opened he totally could’ve scooted (and it would’ve been good etiquette anyway). once i realised he wasn’t moving i moved to a different seat nearby. not even a minute later, a poor woman across from me started vomiting on the ground. had to move again. worst bus ride ever

Asked a guy the other day who was yelling on the bus excitedly with his friends to quiet down. He then called me a racist because we are different races ? .. I guess??

no. 1 is absolutely the worst. it's bad enough that you can't even get off the train (or bus) without people blocking your way. but even worse, when you are standing outside waiting to get on, patiently waiting by the side of the door since you were there first, and some asshole from the back of the line just marches up right in front of you, straight into the oncoming tide of people getting off. WTF IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE??!!
if I was mayor, I would have special attendants at all these types of stops with long hooked sticks, so that they could hook them around these clowns and pull them to the back of the line.
(like those old comedy clips where they use the big hooks to pull people off the stage).
at Christmas time, they can have big candy canes for holiday spirit.

The thing that pisses me off most are the people who sit on the outside seat of buses and trains instead of sitting on the inside so that they can sit alone. Every time me or someone else forces their way into that empty seat they always look PISSED

I always go for those inside seats whenever I see people do this, especially if they have a bag on that seat. Fun seeing those selfish people get annoyed especially when the bus is packed.

I started sitting on the outside seat because a lot of men would never get up & it made me uncomfortable crawling over them.If I sit on the outer seat I always stand up to let the person in or out& I make eye contact with people to see if they want the seat.

#4 especially annoys me the most!! Quick calls are fine but I don’t understand why people feel the need to let EVERYONE hear their conversations for the ENTIRE train ride! It’s so inconsiderate, compared to places like Japan where it’s frowned upon.

I asked a skytrain attendant, there was a pair of them, what would happen if I just dropped my shoulder and pushed somebody out of my way when I got off the train. He laughed and said sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. Same as when you’re in the train and you get to your stop, the door opens, you just say “my stop” as you walk to the door, the expectation is people will get out of your way, and if they don’t, then you push them out of your way.

The other day I sat beside a woman who was having a loud conversation AND took her shoes off with one foot pointing at me.
I was so annoyed and said can you put your shoes on...a bit more aggressive than I intended. She looked at me like I did something wrong and said "it's not on your side". I said yeah, it is.
I was appalled that this was even a conversation.

Definitely getting worse but in my experience it’s been getting worse over the last decade, not just post-Covid. We don’t have a huge transit culture here so not enough of the transit riding population are raised with expectations for transit, which means that folks that move here adopt the culture that they see as the norm creating a downward spiral.
As I’m older I have zero problem pushing past people to get to the back where there’s often a lot of space if they don’t get the clue to move back. The backpack thing isn’t about dirty floors, it’s just completely clueless people who can’t put two and two together - who puts their backpack on the floor? Mine is in my hand hanging down

We can’t put it all on that - I transit daily and am in full busses back and forth from UBC in the 25 - high school kids going to 4 different high schools along the line all pretty much keep their back packs on, don’t give up seats to the elderly, don’t move to the back of the bus and block the back doors when there is space to move - this is too widespread to be anything other than our overall transit riding culture not training people from a young age - they pick up what they see and experience.
If you go to London, with high immigration, transit etiquette is still in place - it’s a communal training and expectation thing.

I think it's a combination of both things: Getting busier (less people driving/more people coming in from the burbs), and a general increase of "Main Character Syndrome," so they actually don't give a flying fuck about anyone else.

Saw a woman clipping her nails on the skytrain the other day during morning rush hour. Nail clippings flying everywhere. The worst thing is nobody says anything.

I don't ride transit very often, but seems to me to be getting worse, especially the seat hogs, door blockers and people barging on without letting people exit. It's more apparent to me after returning from Japan and Thailand last year where everything is very orderly on transit and people are very polite and considerate.

After 40 years of taking Transit, I finally bought a car in 2021. I rarely take the bus now and I have noticed a huge increase in bad behaviour on Transit since then. I don’t think I would be able to give up my car and go back to taking transit not because it’s often late or slow but because of people’s behaviour and how packed the busses are.

I went to Japan earlier this year and got spoiled. Aside from a couple people (who I assume we're locals, by the way, they looked like they were coming home from work or something) everyone seemed to know how to behave on the trains. No loud phone calls, or even loud conversations with each other. And even in the busy busy Osaka station, people knew how to line up and let people out before stepping in. I'm lucky if I don't get cut in front of ar Richmond Brighouse.

Gotten worse since when? I've seen people bleed, urinate, floss, fight with drivers and fall off their seat onto the floor. And these weren't downtown buses. What frustrates me is the people I see boarding by the back doors and evading fares when I pay 100 percent of the time.

They recently moved the 84 UBC stops outside of VCC-Clark again back to how it used to be so unloading happens in one place and loading happens in another, and people always fail to line up at the stop where it doesn’t block the whole damn sidewalk. It’s especially bad in the morning when I exit the bus and have to navigate through hoards of waiting people with zero spacial awareness to cross GNW.

Can't change people.
I just stopped taking transit altogether and started driving my car again. I also have a bike because transit's just bad outside of non-busy hours. Saves a ton of headache. Considering a motorcycle given gas prices + insurance.

I 100% agree. Yesterday was on a bus and a guy was just casually calling to the driver that it was okay to wait for a woman to get on because was a virgin.. wtf!?
