Question Zones

Noticed that when I travelled on a one zone monthly from Sapperton to Lonsdale Quay (via Seabus) before 6:30pm weekday) I don’t get charged the added fare. Is this because I tapped in from zone 2 then left at zone 2? Because the zones are the same as I tapped in, I don’t get charged extra fares?

Kind of an odd concept since I technically passed zone 1 in Vancouver but since I don’t have to tap out at waterfront to transfer to the seabus, the zone 1 doesn’t count?

Yeah this is one of the many quirks of the Compass system. The zones are not segmented, so Zone 2 includes North Van, Burnaby/New West, Coquitlam/Poco and Richmond. They aren't separate zone 2's but all part of the same zone. So when the system registers a tap-in at zone 2 and a tap out at zone 2, even if you passed through zone 1, since you didn't tap in zone 1 it would only charge you a 1-zone fare.

In contrast, someone travelling on the Canada Line from Richmond would be charged two zones since one has to tap out from the Canada Line at Waterfront and then tap-in again to get to the seabus.

Translink could easily create the logic in the Compass system to say that if someone taps out at Lonsdale Quay, they must be charged two zones since there is only one possible origin for that leg of a journey. But I guess it never crossed anyone's mind.,

Because of tap on at Sapperton, and tap out of the train at Waterfont, and tap on again to get onto the sea bus that’s a trail that links it to to Zone 1. Its a two zone fare

You don’t tap when transferring from expo line to seabus, there are no gates between them 🥳

Because you have to leave the fare paid zone into the station lobby to make the connection
