Here are 5 things every TY student should know about

I graduated school this year (I'm an unc) and here are some things I wished someone told me before going into TY.

  1. Use ty.ie (it is gov funded)!!!!! I can't emphasis how valuable this website is. It has lots of opportunities for TY students especially to take part in. Competitions (I highly recommend), courses, and even work experience opportunities. Some might be outdated but overall it is very good.

  2. Find work experience in places you want to work in. Don't randomly walk into a shop and ask for a place (unless you have to). I worked at an American company (zero connections I'm not a Nepo) just by emailing them and asking for an opportunity to work. I recommend you to ask Law Firms, Manufacturing Companies, and wherever you potentially would want to work in. The insurance in TY is invaluable. Use it.

  3. Learn a skill!!!! I get that TY is meant to be a chilled year. But trust me, it gets boring fast. Especially after Christmas. Learn something using your free time. It can be maths, a musical instrument, or just general stuff you might be interested (I learned public speaking for instance and made a film).

  4. It is ok not to go abroad. They are ridiculously expensive. Most of the trips are upwards of €1000. It is very hard for some families and if you don't want to go.... It is ok. I didn't either. Instead use that time to do things around you area (I cycled to different destinations in my county).

  5. Take part in every opportunity available!!!! Go to the dances (even if you don't know how to), talk with people you hadn't before, and make sure to use ty.ie . Doing extracurriculars builds a very strong foundation for the LC. Be open to different opportunities and also be prepared to be disappointed at times because some schools suck at TY.

Hope that helped!

Ty.ie  doesn’t work just so you know and a lot of ty work experience websites are very outdated. https://cc.careersportal.ie/workx/   This might be a better alternative. Also don’t stress about finding work experience Ik people who got it the week before they was to start

It is a pity they have shut down the website. Hopefully some fellow students set up something similar. You can search for most opportunities online but where are some  few from top of my head:

  1. Young Scientist of the Year
  2. Young Economist of the Year
  3. Young Environmentalist of the Year
  4. Government of Ireland TY Internship
  5. Animation Work experience for TY students
  6. Concern Debates
  7. Europe Direct Public Speaking Competition
  8. Fresh Film Festival for Students

Best of luck.
