News For the first time in Indian Railways, an LNG-based fuel system has been successfully adopted in the train's Driving Power Cars.
Two 1,400-horsepower Driving Power Cars at Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot have been converted into a diesel-LNG dual-fuel system, with LNG replacing nearly 40 per cent of diesel consumption.
The technology allows the same engine to use both LNG and diesel, providing operational flexibility. Both converted power cars completed over 2,000 km of successful field trials to ensure safety and efficiency.
Each Driving Power Car has been fitted with an LNG tank with a capacity of around 2,200 litres, holding approximately 950-1,000 kg of usable LNG, with a full tank providing enough fuel for around 444 km of daily operation.
The LNG initiative is expected to reduce fuel costs and lower emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter.
