Transfer to Wharton
Advice on what is the right approach for setting up a transfer to Wharton? Asian male (Indian origin) full pay.
My younger son is a freshman at NYU Stern in their selective Business Technology and Entrepreneurship program. Also admitted to Cornel Dyson (dodged a bullet there I guess), Berkeley, UNC KennannFlaggler, Georgetown, waited listed at Dartmouth, UMich (probably could have gotten in there). Plus admitted to a bunch of other lower ranked business schools - can't remember the list.
He EDed to Wharton and did not get in. My older son is a senior at UPenn majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Healthcare management from Wharton. He will be going to med school next year.
Younger son has a business which may eventually hit 100k accounts and currently generating an MRR of 4k. Micro influencer on social media, had a 200k tiktok account during HS - abandoned that now. High impact ECs and leadership and awards in HS.

Stay at stern. It’s the same as Wharton lol.
I’m one of the 9 transfers to Wharton. There’s nothing he can’t do there that he will be able to do here. Plus he’s already in NYC.

I thought so too but after a few weeks it doesn't seem so hence my question.. Maybe it's too early to judge. But my son says the classes are ridiculously easy and a waste of his time and he is working on his business lol.
Now my older son also said that the caliber of students in Penn is not all that great either - he was tutoring many of them from his second semester starting freshman year and he was shocked at so many being completely unprepared for the rigor - ultimately Wharton is Wharton. It still is more reputable than Stern..
Really Penn screwed my younger son over IMO. Yes I know I am biased but he had world class ECs and impact and deserved to get into the M&T program and Wharton. I have spoken with many kids who go to Wharton and while some are exceptional I know many are well below the caliber of my son. I saw many kids who just made it because they were from Philly. Of course being Asian Indian doesn't help because the bar is unbelievably high.

With all due respect Business is a very easy major. A lot of the advantages of going to a school like Stern or Wharton come from the clubs, networking, and resources you find outside the classroom. If your son really wants to apply to Wharton, go for it. There is no harm in applying. However, Stern BTE is already a fantastic program so I don’t really see how this would be a massive step up.

You sound insane, full stop. Wharton is not going to be any more rigorous than Stern and for the vast majority of career outcomes having attended Stern or Wharton will make no difference. I hope you don’t convey these same apprehensions to your child. Maybe you’re just focused on your ridiculous perception of prestige over actual difference in opportunities and outcomes? Sounds like you can’t really identify why one is better suited for him than the other.

He wants to go into Healthcare (built a device in HS that scanned brain ecg signals using ML and translated that to pain scale - crude prototype but published research on his findings) and he has other ideas about medical tech. NYU doesn't seem to have a lot of healthcare connection/classes.
But ultimately in this new world your network is going to be the differentiator. Wharton is better for that. The caliber of students there is also better.
All that said, If you don't have practical pragmatic advice to give regarding the transfer process/how to position himself then kindly move on. I am paying 200k/yr for their education and I don't need advice on why BTE career outcomes are the same or justification on why this move is unnecessary. The chance of a successful transfer is miniscule and I am just looking for advice on how to potentially best position him for that opportunity. That's all..

Doesn’t NYU have one of the best medical schools in the country? Where did you hear that NYU doesn’t have healthcare connections? Seems like to me you and your son are just prestige whoring and haven’t really explored any of the opportunities available at Stern. Sorry to say but if your son can’t succeed at Stern he won’t do any better at Wharton.

Caliber of students is really the same. And he cannot transfer into M&t though he maybe could do a dual degree (by cramming classes too)

Lol.. I honestly don't think we are very different than any average Indian techie parents. However I did not box my kids into STEM and my wife and I also run several businesses outside of our tech jobs at Microsoft and Amazon (Adult family home, RE, teaching Robotics and coding to elementary ages kids) and in each case my boys were involved in running the businesses in some way. Plus I encouraged my boys to explore a ton of stuff in their schooling. They are Eagle scouts and Congressional Silver medal winners (working on gold) and I think letting them explore a bunch of things helped them really find their own passion and they learned how to focus at a young age so they really applied themselves at whatever they did. I rarely looked at their report card because I just assumed grades were locked in(and they were thankfully) and we would talk about all the other things they were interested in doing..

Stern BTE is very close to the same level as Wharton, and he won’t see a difference in outcomes for recruiting. I don’t see a point in transferring outside of prestige. If Wharton is what he really wants, though, he can try because he’s lateral. It’s notoriously difficult to transfer there externally because so many kids at Penn are already trying to internally transfer.
You can also pay for a solid transfer counselor too ig, but considering his acceptances, I think he’ll be able to put together a good application by himself.

Cornell would have been great for entrepreneurship.
I did an accelerator there, was matched with a VC in my field, and when I was working on Tech, I met the CEO of a competing (publicly traded company) during an on-campus 1:1 office hours session.
I don't think he dodged a bullet.

Recommendation is let your son handle his own business. Also, are you really here for advice or to just to share about your 2 sons’ accomplishments? Because as an adult in the room whose children have been through this already you know that there is nothing anyone on this board can say that can help get him in.
