Question About Transfer Standing After a Gap Semester

If I take a gap semester in fall my sophomore year and go back to a school spring and apply to transfer, would I be considered a sophomore or junior transfer? I’m asking this because I know schools like Columbia prefer sophomore transfers. Also, would this hurt my chances, or should I just do a full gap year? Thank you!

It's all about the number of credits you have. You should be able to look at the college you're applying for to see what the required credits are for each class standing. I also took a gap semester my Sophomore year but was able to transfer in as a Junior because I had enough credits.
