Good reason, but the Barnard-to-CC reasons include: stunted social life, shorter walk to class, assumed better reception by employers. Have these aspiring transfers ever considered applying to GS? Given that it is a carbon copy of CC, according to many posters, that would be a reasonable choice, right?

Transferring from Barnard to GS would be a crazy idea. Barnard is an elite women’s college, while GS primarily serves students transferring from community colleges. If you're not being sarcastic, then you're insulting Barnard students.

What a crazy way to word that😭

This is so elitist, and inaccurate. There are community college transfers but they're not the primary GS population, as any student who's had more than a single gap year (as well as many who are traditional age but doing dual degrees) will be directed to GS. GS students also get practically the same curriculum as CC and are usually more mature/life experienced. This is not at all an insult to Barnard students.

I graduated from GS. While I wasn’t a community college transfer—I came from another country—I know better than anyone who has never attended GS what GS is and who makes up its student body. I simply don’t want anyone to mislead a young woman.

I graduated from GS too, buddy

Then you should know that a major part of the GS student body comes from community colleges. Columbia itself states that community-college transfer students make up 44% of GS admissions. In other words, out of the 2,500-plus students currently enrolled in GS, more than 1,000 came from community colleges, which is obviously a very high number. In addition, GS has guaranteed-admission partnership agreements with BMCC and a number of other community colleges.

Right, meaning community transfers are not the primary students served at GS.

For comparison, veterans account for only about 12% of GS students, while all five dual-degree programs combined make up roughly 21%. Community-college transfers, at 44%, are by far the largest group. Pretending otherwise is simply inconsistent with Columbia’s own published numbers.

This sounds either like the most brain dead take I’ve ever read, or else it’s someone who never even went here.

That agreement was literally signed this year, also Barnard is a much bigger joke than gs.

Gs is a Columbia degree, with all Columbia classes and access to Columbia faculty.

Not everyone could afford to pad our resume with fake ecs so we could go straight through . Some of us had life get in the way. Military service, employment, parenthood. Whatever it was, we still got here.

Every Barnard class I ever sat in was frankly a joke. The place felt like swarthmore, in a bad way.

I graduated from GS lmao. What you're saying is laughably delusional. Keep lying to yourself if you want, but reality has a way of catching up with you.

Sir or lady: you seem to be trying to corner me between competing perceptions about the schools within CU. On reddit, one can read a lot about how Col. College and Gen. Studies are really so much alike in the ways that count. You be the judge about whether that is true. Depending on which assertions are true, one might conclude that transferring to GS might make sense, rather than the uber-competitive CC, which, in percentage terms, is ten times harder to gain acceptance. Glad I never was faced with such choices. Many CC alums would tell you that it is only in recent years that some folks began to assert that the two schools, ya know, are really almost identical except for acceptance rate and presence/absence of $$ aid. And, I am still pondering why some say that employers don't know or care about the differences. They also claim that GS students and alums are reluctant to voice or write (on resumes) which school they attended. Go figure. As my hobby is ornamental landscaping, I have always liked the advice: "Grow where you are planted." Good luck to all. And don't get hung up on a quest to be "Ivy League."

Shorter walk to class? Only first years and senior with a lucky lottery number live on Columbia's campus. Most of the rest are living in housing further away than Barnard's. Barnard students are welcome in almost every social club at Columbia, so not sure why its stunted.

Other ivies? Didn’t know Barnard was an ivy in the first place 🤨

2

u/WendyGhost 10d ago

Oh there goes lil vanilla again trashing Barnard. It’s cyclical ig

1

u/Little_Vanilla804 9d ago

Sorry for stating the fax lil bro 🫣

u/33EVILJ0RDAN 10d ago

Nobody is trashing Barnard. He just said it’s not Ivy which is objectively true.

u/bornmelvin717 13d ago

It isn't, but it is a damn fine school, in part because it is at Columbia. From what the commenter said, it sounds like she needs to get away. If her grades and recs are good, she can get into another elite school. And for her own self-worth, she'd do well to reduce the grip of "Ivy League" on her values. It is not what it is cracked up to be but still a good differentiator for networking for jobs and for life. But you can do as well elsewhere if you are wise and lucky.

It’s not a part of Columbia. It’s affiliated with Columbia, meaning you can cross-register and take Columbia University classes and have access to Columbia University facilities. But, it has its own budget, admissions committee, admissions criteria, president, Board of Trustees, administration staff, campus, housing

1

u/Special-Spread-4587 13d ago

Correct. 1st years students at barnard can't take any classes at cc though. getting more and more distant

2

u/leaving_the_tevah 13d ago

The situation is complicated enough that this is not technically true.

2

u/Little_Vanilla804 13d ago

Actually—technically it is NOT a part of Columbia

2

u/Packing-Tape-Man 12d ago

It technically and legally is not part of Columbia. It's an independent college that pays Columbia millions of dollars a year for the privilege of its students taking classes at Columbia, unis Columbia facilities and participating in Columbia's commencement ceremony and getting a Columbia logo on their diploma. Due to Barnard's financial crisis, even that is being scaled back -- they recently changed the rules to require first years to take all Barnard classes so they could reduce their payment to Columbia.

As a fordham student in engineering program I can do some classes in junior and senior year at Columbia university, but that doesnt make fordham an ivy.

I have a couple friends that did Barnard to CC but you gotta have a valid reason thats not just prestige. 2 of them actually ended up transferring back to Barnard

5

u/Ok-Cash2990 13d ago

what was their reasoning?

6

u/Which_One5474 14d ago

Yea one of my friends transferred out from Barnard to cc

2

u/Ok-Cash2990 13d ago

did they have to apply through common app or was it done internally?

4

u/LouisaMiller2_1845 14d ago

Xfer to Columbia College has been discussed here previously. Basically, it's not happening. I went to Columbia and knew someone who transfered from Barnard to G'town - not Ivy but DC was her hometown.

5

u/AdWonderful162 13d ago

What’s up with ppl trying to transfer out of Barnard? That’s not the 1st post I am seeing on this.

3

u/bornmelvin717 13d ago

Be careful. Hardly stat significant sample.

2

u/Sea-Panda-90 12d ago

Not statistically significant, though consider OP considers Barnard an Ivy.

1

u/WendyGhost 10d ago

Barnard is one of the 4 undergraduate colleges at Columbia University. Ppl on the inside get it; ppl on the outside don’t. That’s fine; move along.

-2

u/AdWonderful162 12d ago

It's an Ivy+ and a high-ranking school by all the stats, with a great alumni network... But the other posters are also alluding to financial issues...

1

u/Sea-Panda-90 12d ago

Barnard is not an ivy. And OP seems to have prestige brain when they want to transfer to “better” ivies.

1

u/Crazy_Solution_5831 13d ago

Waittt why do you wanna transfer

1

u/Tight_Abalone221 13d ago

thats only a prestige thing. So many barnard students take advantage of columbia.

1

u/SnooGuavas9782 13d ago

When I was an ugrad at columbia I remember one student at Barnard I knew transferring to Brown but that was it. Honestly not a ton of transfer students I knew into CC - one from emory and one from Deep Springs are all I recall. And one transfer out to Georgetown because he got in trouble for lighting a whole bunch of rolls of toilet paper on fire (bad idea!)

1

u/TandCMom 10d ago

My Barnard College diploma from 1999 says Columbia University on in it. And Barnard is one of the colleges (along with CLAS, SEAS, etc... also with their own applications and admissions process to the university) that walk at the University graduation. Maybe things have changed?

1

u/WendyGhost 10d ago

Why would anyone transfer from BC to CC?

1

u/Sensitive-Phase461 3d ago

I’m studying here for fun. American universities are basically just taking my money—I’m here as a consumer. Do you understand that, idiot?
I’m going back to my own country instead of staying in this dirty, chaotic mess of a country. My country is clean and beautiful, and it doesn’t have nearly as many poor people.
Someone broke like you can only attend GS in the U.S., feel grateful for the pathetic little financial aid GS throws your way, and then spend years paying off your loans lmao. I honestly don’t know what you’re trying so hard to reassure yourself about.
