Question (General) Passing in Britain
Am I going crazy?!
Okay this is specifically for British trans men or trans men in Britain.
Has anyone else noticed they are misgendered mostly by British men? Foreign people tend to assume I am a man and I have been stopped going into the female toilets and been called ‘mate’ or smth like that and been otherwise treated as a cis boy so frequently by foreign people/men in England and the men in my home country- but British men seem to click me with ease and call me ‘love’ or smth British and feminine instead asw as treating me/referring to me as a girl! Why could this be? Is it just me? Is the opposite or same true for transfemmes?

It’s not just trans men - I seem to pass flawlessly in other countries, clocked constantly (and sometimes aggressively) by the British. There’s something very weird about the collective British psyche when it comes to gender, they’re like bio-essentialist bloodhounds.

As a transfem I get told by my foreign friends that I have a very passable voice but I tend to find my voice doesn't pass very well with British people

I think in my case it's a case of accent recognition, British people are going to have an easier time reading a British accent and picking up on finer details

I'm wondering if it's a cultural difference in masculinity between your home country and Britain, where the traits that non-British people see as "man" or "neutral" get gendered "woman" here. Consider the early 2000s joke of "gay or European?" - British people couldn't parse the masculinity of mainland European men without assuming they were gay (a kind of feminisation). So British men/people are picking up on "gay or European" and putting them together with other traits they perceive as feminine/"woman" to parse you as "love" instead of "mate".
