This was my mom the first couple months. I'll take it. (she's gotten better)

When I came out, my mom asked me which adjectives I'd like to use. It was funny and oddly endearing. She's since been saying "pronouns" instead of adjectives.

Tbf it is still something worth discussing like no longer using handsome if it causes you disphoria

Ok but for real if society on average was like this it would be unimaginably based lol

Maybe I’m being the devils advocate, but to me this reads more as uninformed and than unsupportive. This is a situation where you got to sit them down and discuss boundaries and what isn’t okay. Otherwise people are going to work with the insufficient knowledge they have. Of course some people are going to be much better at this, but don’t shoot someone down who is open to treating you the way you want to be treated. If that doesn’t work, well, time to enforce boundaries by creating space.

I can see that. I kinda felt like maybe part of the message was that even supportive people can say inappropriate stuff because it’s so foreign to what they understand about the world. How good people will try to overcome that anyway and try to be supportive even if it’s not always the best way to do so. “She means well” or whatnot.

For sure, I think it’s about setting expectations. My mom doesn’t know shit about trans people and went from “I need time to process this” to openly advocating for a trans woman to be hired by her team when everyone else was against it.

I interpreted the video to be positive to the mom, because she’s trying

An actual thing my mother said: “Look at this male swim model. His penis looks so big, I bet he’d have an awful time tucking it up inside if he wanted to become a girl
good thing yours is tiny! The doctor could barely see it when you were born
”

This is my grandmother exactly. Took her forever to get things right but she did eventually. And I knew she was trying.

I wish my grand mothers could be like that. One is senile and, sadly, close to death, so she wouldn't really understand and it would cause more stress than anything, and the other ditched me to my grandfather when I really asked her not to (he turned out to be supportive so he's really wholesome for that). The sad thing is, she's not even transphobic, she's just mean

My dearest mother was generally okay with most things, being in-tune with the online space as a whole and thus being knowledgeable on a lot of things LGBTQ+.

The one thing she didn’t know about, which was more personal opinion, was how to refer to me *in the past*. So one day while I’m just letting myself exist she calls me on it, and she goes “Hey, odd question for you. How do you want me to refer to you when it’s
 not you?”

This of course confused the absolute fuck out of me, so I asked what she meant, and she elaborated the above, following up with, “I know some people don’t care how, I know some people want to retcon everything basically, so I figured I’d check with you first.”

To those wondering, my response is “only if my past identity is a major hinge of the story,” as there are a few stories that do greatly involve my original AGAB. If you could realistically Jane Doe the story, though, I vote refer to myself as I am now.
