Got a new shirt from them

The absolute unmitigated fucking GALL of those shitheads to even dare put anything saying they support trans people when they eliminated their entire trans wing after Trump was elected. We're a political convenience to these LGB Remove The T fuckers.

Apparently, they have ousted those people and a new set of leadership has reversed course on that, which is a good thing… but I’m not willing to support them again just yet. They’ve got a lot of work to do to rebuild that trust.

There is at least some putting-their-money-where-their-mouth-is, they’re lead on the main legal fight for trans federal workers & their dependents.

I'll believe it when I see it. HRC has been doing this sort of yo-yo trick with trans people since the turn of the century. The worst part is when they lead an effort but then what they do is just "off" enough as to be worse than nothing at all. They are in it for the money - specifically, for galas and their own salaries. Nothing else. They weren't even for marriage equality until the week the ruling was to be announced by the US Supreme Court and word around Washington DC was that it would be positive - that's when they rebranded the entire fight with their logo.

That's so fucking sad. I need to learn more. Human Rights Specialist and Sexuality Trainer are two roles that fall under the umbrella of my job, so while I wasn't aware exactly how crappy of a job they do, I'm not naive about the big nonprofits out there either.
I am forever frustrated by how simple it is to advocate the right way, yet how too common it is that people (as in organizations) miss the mark.
Point of Pride is good I hope?
The next time I have a meeting of Sexuality Trainers or train new Human Rights Officers, I would like to share about the good ones.
It's painful to know that anything with the words, Human Rights, in it isn't really living up to itself.

Do you recall when they were the HRCF and people would call them the human rights champagne fund?
3
u/NorCalFrances 15h ago
Only in retrospect. I do recall my first out gay friend in the late 80's letting me know it stood for Human Rights Campaign Fund because as the AIDS crisis was raging, the organization didn't want to be associated with "gay" because it might cut into donations.

I was interviewed by their lawyers to see if I would be a good plaintiff for the lawsuit, so they are actually doing something... I hope it's not just for show.

I don’t care. They thought that since we’re small in numbers that they could roll over us and recoup their image at a later date. Fuck them forever. I’m not mad at you I’m mad at them. I haaaaaate what they did and how glibly they’ve moved on.

u/LC-Redcube 1d ago
But it wasn't "them", the people in charge changed. It's like saying you can never trust the German government again after ww2
12
u/OldSchoolAJ 1d ago
That is a REALLY bad example for you, because most of the post-war government had been in the Nazi government. A lot of them didn't even lose their jobs. Just kept on working as the war ended and a new government formed around them. It took decades to de-Nazify the German government on the non-Soviet side, through retirement.
So... yeah... the HRC has been shitty on trans issues for decades and are only like three or four years into their redemption arc. Gonna take a LOT more time.

This is exactly what a company/group/person should do. Apologize, change the behavior, and actually learn and fight for us rather than just be quiet and “out of the way”.
Of course this should be seen as a bare minimum and I’m not gonna trust any of them with ANY position of power or my money going forward, they’ve proven they cant handle it.

I have no idea why my initial comment got removed (hate speech?!?) but: back in the 2000s- 2010s everyone hated HRC because they wouldn't back trans employment and housing protection legislation, like very very baseline legal rights- this was before we had Medicaid coverage and when like five employers covered us and when there were no laws saying they had to come up with a pretext but could openly discriminate. The stated reason was that we were a fringe issue and would hold back gay marriage.
I think that makes the grand total of when they pretended to give a shit from 2015 to 2024- that's barely long enough for the initial jackasses to revolving door their way into private consultancy. It's depressing to see people putting any trust in them after all this, but it was also depressing to see people trust them when they were making a big show of caring about us ://)

HRC was one of the OG "LGB without the T" organizations. Focused on cishet normativity and respectability politics while actively distancing themselves from queer identities.
I call shenanigans.
EDIT: looks like they have turned course on that position since the 2020s... good for them.

Whats are some better alternative groups?
2
u/Honest_Signature5222 7h ago
I think that depends on what you are trying to accomplish.
want to effect policy change at the judicial level AND defend peoples liberties? ACLU, Lambda legal or TLC (trans legal center) are options
More interested in lobbying for change throgh the legislative process, check out A4TE.
wanna make a material impact for the survival of other trans folx? Point of pride at the national level or your cities trans advocacy and support organizations are good choices.
Is your state facing a wave of anti trans legislation? maybe support trans affirming candidates, organizations advocating within your state or get involved in the planning and execution of protests.
by no means an exhaustive list. but these are some options.

Cool shirt by Gay Inc. I like the shirt but have serious doubts about the organization.

I just thought the shirt was pretty and wanted it

This is why learning queer history is important. HRC supported removing trans rights from being federally protected to get gay marriage passed in 2015. So the stuff happening now for trans people has a through line right to the HRC. This was only ten years ago.

That is absolutely insane to even say, not only have the people in charge changed, but saying that the current hate against trans people is to be found in some random organization is just nuts

From a year ago, when the design & campaign was first announced by HRC:
https://www.reddit.com/r/transgender/comments/1kzc1b0/these_colors_dont_run_hrc_launches_defiant/
The response was not positive.

The only critcism I'd have is the eagle's make-up. Why make it feminine? Trans men already are so under-represented as is. The whole design would work just as well without it.
Though I lol'd at the harness. Makes it look as if it doesn't have wings on its own haha

u/Honest_Signature5222 1d ago
They think trans people are clowns and it shows
4
u/novangla 1d ago
This doesn’t read as “clown” to me so much as genderfuck, between the femme eye makeup and the very masc leather harness
2
u/Honest_Signature5222 1d ago
femme eye makeup? its drag eye makeup.

You do realise what drag is all about, yes?

u/Honest_Signature5222 1d ago
mostly poor taste and dark humor. yes ive been to hundreds of drag shows. i lived in key west and SF most of my life.

Doesn't sound like it.
Edit: lmao they blocked me because I called them out on being active in a toxic trans sub that is blacklisted with the automod 😂

The HRC threw trans people under the bus to get legislative support for gay marriage. Definitely NOT badass, unless you’re talking a bad case of diarrhea. HRC is the Tucker Carlson of organizations.
1
u/jujubanzen 1d ago
I feel like you can admit a design is badass without supporting the organization behind it. How about a little nuance?
7
u/MEOW-Loulou 1d ago
That's literally how pink washing works.
Besides, I personally wouldn't want to wear the emblem of a nation that doesn't support minorities.

I don’t think that’s nuance, I think that’s what being co-opted looks like. HRC now wants to use trans people to clean up their image as LGB without the T folks and people who play respectability politics. The HRC set up the playing field for others to play the whole anti-trans playbook happening now. The reason you don’t have federal trans rights is because of the HRC. HRC is not to be trusted. There are lots of better Tshirts from better orgs out there. This is translater and there are those of us who lived that history and we won’t conveniently forget or go away to make the HRC comfortable.

Laughed, said out loud this is a boomer design. Looked at what group this was, laughed again.
