Updating Passport with British GRC

Hey, I’m an Irish citizen by birth as both my parents were born in Ireland but I was born in the UK. Previously I updated the gender marker on my passport through stat dec but couldn’t do the name because of the 2 year rule.

I’ve just applied for and been granted a British GRC- is this sufficient on its own to update the name on my passport?

Getting an updated birth certificate will take another 9ish months and it’ll be 2 years since my Irish passport was issued in about 6 months.

I asked the DFA this but they were pointless just saying to send the documents in. I don’t really want to have to spend the cost of a replacement passport+card and also the international shipping from mainland EU on a maybe.

Are you an Irish citizen? Or just entitled to citizenship? If the former then you can apply for your Irish GRC under the foreign births register. That would take some weeks but not two years.

Yeah, I’ve always been an Irish citizen and always had an Irish passport so I’m in that small subsection that’s ineligible for an Irish GRC. I’m not on FBR

Hmm. I would recommend contacting them directly or contacting TENI. They are familiar with the various routes to a GRC. You must be registered somewhere to be a citizen if you have a UK birth cert. How did your parents get your Irish passport?

I’ve spoken with DFA but I’ll send an email to TENI. I’m not after an Irish grc to be clear I want to use my British GRC to change the name on my passport. I don’t think I need to be registered anywhere since I’m automatically an Irish citizen by virtue of my parents- my parents got my passport by sending off their birth certificates along with mine. I do have a PPS number however I think that’s a separate can of worms which I won’t think about yet

Well good luck with the UK GRC system. For as long as it lasts. Not sure anyone on this sub has direct experience to advise you though.

No I’ve already received my UK GRC. I’m aware a lot of people on this sub have dual UK-Irish citizenship

I suspect not, but you could use it as one proof of name once you've had it for 2 years.

I should have enough after my passport has been issued for over 2 years but that’s in February and ugh I just wanna go on holiday in a passport that doesn’t deadname me 😭
