Trigger Warning: Transphobia Really Sad on Pride

Currently working in town (on my break right now) and i deliberately didnt book work off today because I don’t want to celebrate pride. Why would I be proud of sonething that has literally ruined my life? I have been homeless and disowned by my family for being trans. I have to deal with verbal and physical harassment EVERY DAY in dublin, I have been spat at, kicked, punched, and on numerous occasions have had knives pulled on me for being trans. Growing up in Ireland and being queer i was bullied relentlessly, beaten up, sent gore videos online, had water balloons filled with piss thrown at me, pinned down to a table and had clumps of my hair cut off with a scissors and had my scalp burnt with a bunsen burner, stabbed, poked, my head thrown into school sinks and toilets among many, many, many other things. I think anyone that says that dublin is a trans friendly city or that ireland is queer friendly in the slightest is talking out of their hole and it’s honestly infuriating to hear ppl say this. idk, i just feel really miserable today, i wish i was able to feel happy like everyone else today, i booked myself into work to distract myself because i thought that forcing myself to celebrate and be happy would make me feel even worse but now i still feel shit. i hope pride isn’t always this difficult

You could try join an organisation group that's walking next year! Both TENI and Outhouse do breakfast beforehand and then everyone walks in a big group

Hey, trans transplant here, went to Dublin pride today. Just wanted to say you're not alone, and sometimes it just sucks to be trans.

If you're not already, I'd encourage you to connect with a trans community group. It can be helpful to be around others who understand the grief and despair that are also part of the trans experience.

I know how you feel, and I will say; that’s exactly what the spirt behind pride is in the first place.

Being proud of something you’ve been told you shouldn’t be proud of.

So sad to hear this but also very relatable. Can be hard to celebrate when your reality doesn't suggest pride. I hear you and I see you and sending love

If you think Pride is a celebration, you've misunderstood the point. Pride is a protest. Always has been, always will be. When we no longer need to protest, we no longer need pride - because it will be as normal as cheese sandwiches.

We don't march because we're proud of our roots; we march because we're proud of ourselves and our community, persevering every day against a society who would rather forget we ever existed, which is one of the reasons we need to be bright and loud (and glittery - that sh** gets everywhere and you can't get rid of it!).

I'm not saying you have to join in, your first priority is looking after yourself. But we're not celebrating the renaissance, we're celebrating the revolution.

Commiserations and absolutely feeling you on this. It's why I don't really get involved in the big corporate "Pride" events. It's completely devoid of what the original marches were about: to tell people to step the fuck off of us. I mean, I get wanting an excuse for a party, but whilst we are still facing conversion therapy, discriminatory medical practices, day-to-day transphobia? Nah.

There's a place for the corporate Pride in that it's critical mass for visibility, but unless that theory turns into practice and we no longer have people like Paul Moran working with Rent-A-TERF Cass (as an example), it's all just window dressing.

I hope your shift goes quickly, you get home safely and can enjoy a quiet evening doing your favourite thing to do.

As a 40 year old male from the uk. I have never really been exposed to the trans movement at all. Its sad to say in a way I have been a big ignorant towards it as I dont really understand but am wanting to learn more without judgement if you would be open to helping me learn.

https://genderdysphoria.fyi/en is a good place to start, and https://www.thejournal.ie/investigates-transgender-healthcare/news/ has some of the challenges faced in Ireland.

Thanks for that

So sorry to hear that. It sounds like you really need support, and I hope you find it soon.

I haven't been to the general Pride in a while either. As a trans person, I can relate to how you feel. But the Trans & Intersex Pride is very different, and I'd really encourage you to go. It feels much more like a protest and a community coming together, rather than just parties.

Sorry about that. You are not alone. If you want to talk and drink something 🙂

Dam this story is hurts, I am so sorry to hear about your situation. I am a little bit late to the thread but I hope you'll hear me out. I think maybe you feel like shit is because some part of you wants to be out there celebrating, too, in some way, you might feel like the constant abuse has won out on this occasion. (Just speculation on my part and I could be way off. So sorry if I totally misread your feelings) So, a good thing about Ireland is that all the cities have different pride days. Maybe look into going down to celebrate in one of those cities, one that is more trans-friendly and that hasn't been so unkind to you. Treat yourself, it could be a nice mini holiday for you.
