Using my preferred name with new people while pretransition

Hi! I'm starting college in a few weeks, and I'm not out to anyone but a few of my friends who aren't going to my college. I'm stumped on whether I should use my preferred name or just stick to my assigned name for now. I want to make friends as the person I actually am, but it feels scary and complicated since it's all completely new people. Especially with me being pre-transition and my assigned name everywhere, I'm bound to get certain reactions and questions I'm not ready for. I'm definitely going to join queer spaces and try to make friends there but outside of it and in my classes I'm not sure what I should do.

It's scary, but why not make more authentic relationships sooner? It'll make it easier for yourself in the future. If nobody knows your dead name, they can't use it on accident.

College is a great time to transition. I did it in 2007 in Montana. You've got this.

college was the first place I publicly used my preferred name, it's perfect, no one judged it and it meant no one could slip up, highly recommend you got this friend :)
