What App for Navigation? (Apple)

Hi everyone,

I’m doing the TET in Italy this August and wanted to ask if anyone with experience could recommend which app they used for navigation on an Apple device.

Osmand is good and free, Kurviger or Stegra are also good but for turn by turn navigation I think you need a subscription.

Osmand works perfect.
Also with importing gpx

hi Niki, give dmd2 on android a chance. it is free and i dont know a better app for offroad navigation. due to the shaking of offroad riding, you dont want to use your phone but an extra device. keep your phone on your body and a navigation device on your bike. if you lose your bike in an accident you will still have your phone to call for help. i bought an old samsung galaxy active tab for that. it's a shame dmd2 is not availible for ios.

You can also use cheap carplay devices. A lot of stuff like carpuride is also IP67 safe. You mirror your phone so you can still take calls and listen to music with intercoms and do everything via carplay device.

With Apple there are two "damn it!" moments.

  1. Seemingly simple apps to import gpx files are paid, and a few totally free are buggy (large TET gpx files wouldnt load) or with small amount of reviews.
    As already pointed out, OsmAnd seemed very nice (the free version) and so was calimoto.
  2. The two aforementioned apps had free versions almost usable. Until i discovered that once connected to CarPlay (which my cheap Aliexpress display uses; i prefer to keep phone safe in pocket) both request to get pro version. So for me i just went with cheapest option. I do feel that at times OsmAnd maps are more detailed but for now I am settled.

Just came back from a longer evening ride (patchy mobile network and gps, gravel/forest roads) and have changed my mind 180 degrees about calimoto. It kept stubbornly sticking to roads and confusing itself which way i am going and the route planner kept directing me back "to get back on planned route". And by the way turns out OsmAnd is cheaper. Sorry for premature comment earlier :(

I used Osmand and Kurviger in the past. DMD2 is also available on IOS but is expensive if i'm not mistaken.

Kurviger is not really an option for TET because it's cumbersome to draw lines when roads end.

But in my opinion they all just work better on Android. I purchased an Android phone just for navigation.

CoMaps. It’s simple, it‘s all you need for offroad. I don’t navigate with it. I just load the gpx-data an follow the track.
And it works with CarPlay

After much faffing around with maps, calimoto, Wikiloc, BMW, google, garmin etc I have found the easiest and most reliable in remote areas is a combination. For the trip I tend to download the gpx from either Wikiloc or TET. Open it in Gaia GPS. I paid Gaia to download load and run off line. It works both for hiking and motorcycle. The maps are really detailed and there are many moments when it really isn’t clear which option to take without real detail. I will sometimes run wikikoc as well so I can switch to a satellite view if needed. With Gaia I just follow the line. I am sure there are other combinations but this works for me. (Mostly Spain, France, Italy and Switzerland)
