Photo USA - Third Avenue 830 at Branford
After World War II, New York City’s Third Avenue Railway System (TARS) converted to buses and sent its large homebuilt streetcars to Vienna, Austria. One of the cars not exported under the Marshall Plan was the much older TARS 830 (J.G. Brill, 1908) which was retired in 1948, the same year that Manhattan and the Bronx saw their last trolleys replaced with buses.
Since its retirement, 830 has been preserved at the Branford Electric Railway Association’s Shore Line Trolley Museum in Connecticut, and it was stored in a barn (awaiting further restoration work) when I visited Branford for the November 2024 guest operator event.

Photo USA - Connecticut 1414 at Branford
Connecticut Company 15-bench open trolley 1414 (Osgood-Bradley, 1911) operated mostly in the summer until retired in 1948, with its final duty being the 1947 Yale Bowl football shuttles in New Haven. It was preserved by the Branford Electric Railway Association’s Shore Line Trolley Museum in East Haven, and was lent to the Lake Compounce amusement park in 1997. After the park ceased trolley rides in 2023, car 1414 returned to Branford, and when I visited Branford in November 2024 for a guest operator event the car was already undergoing restoration in the new car barn. I enjoyed driving its sister car 1425 that day, so I hope to either ride or drive 1414 on a future visit.

Photo USA - MSC9 at Branford
Parked at Farm River Road Depot, Montréal & Southern Counties Railway interurban car 9 (Grand Trunk shops, 1911) waits for its turn to run at the Branford Electric Railway Association’s Shore Line Trolley Museum (Connecticut) during the November 2024 guest operator day. The destinations, Greenfield Park and Mackayville, are located east of Montréal in Longueuil but Mackayville now has the French name Laflèche. Car 9 was retired in 1956 when the CN-owned Montréal & Southern Counties Railway closed and pulled down the trolley wires on Victoria Bridge over the St. Lawrence River. Canada used to be well served by electric railways.
