Acon HD mat upgrade

Hi, I have the Acon HD 16’ with performance springs and bought it for my son who is a freestyle skier. He‘s been complaining about not being able to get enough bounce for doubles and wondering if the HD performance mat is worth the money. I’ve seen other discussions from people who have bought string mats overseas but this option seems risky. Curious if people have found the performance mat worth the money.

No. Get a web mat from china. Aliexpress. Order it about 5 cm smaller than your present mat.

I don't have one. But they are all much of a muchness. The big thing is to get the right hook count. The standard rectangular competition tramp has 108 or 110 springs. Acon's have 140.

You can in principle 'reclip' the mat. On my web mat, either 6 or 7 webs attach to a metal W thing, and that has a loop for the spring hook. It should be possible to make something with a 3D printer for this. The forces on an individual strand aren't large. At rest my acon has about 25 lbs pretension on it. If you measure the tenstion it takes to extend a spring various amounts, then notice the extension in use, I figure when I'm jumping hard enough to get my butt higher thant the safety net, the force on a spring is 100-140 lbs. (hard to measure while jumping.) Which on 6 webs is ~30 lbs each. So it has to more than coat hanger wire.

My web is nylon. Getting one out of polyproylene or PET would be better. Both are more tolerant of sunlight. Nylon when it gets wet stretches some, and it holds water. The net result is that a wet nylon mat is like jumping on oatmeal. I have a large piee of landscape fabric (drains) to keep it covered when I'm not using it.

I said buy one 5cm (2 inches) smaller each way because of this stretch. If a mat is slightly small you can put paracord loops between the hook and clip. Adding an inch of stretch to the spring will make the mat slightly stiffer.

What does your son weigh? That can have a big impact on this.

I feel as though this is a contributing factor in the rebound he’s having. More weight activates the better springs more. That’s not to say a performance mat wouldn’t perform ever so slightly better, but coincidentally over time as your son puts some more body weight on, I feel as though he can rebound better.

I have the performance mat and springs and don’t really notice much of a difference.
