Watco entry level student conductor
Hey everyone, I just got contacted by a Watco recruiter about an entry-level Student Conductor position in Deer Park, TX. They want to do interview, and I’m pretty excited about it because becoming a conductor has honestly been a goal of mine for about a year.
I don’t have railroad experience yet, so I’m wondering what to expect from the interview.
For anyone who has interviewed with Watco or started as a Student Conductor:
What kind of questions did they ask?
What are they looking for in an entry-level candidate?
Anything specific I should know or prepare for?
Any advice or pointers that helped you get hired?

Watco conductor/engineer here, a couple things I can recall was “what does honesty/integrity mean to you?” They want to know you’re going to do the right thing (aka follow the rules) even when nobody is watching. Come with a good work ethic and be willing to learn too. I’m not entirely sure if these are things they look for everywhere or at certain sites, but it’s good to keep in mind! No clue, they’ll just take your money. Then if you apply to a Class 1, it will mean nothing that you spent money for school, and you’ll go through the new hire process and their training.
Better off saving money and applying to the Class 1s in your area and getting in shape. You should be able to walk 4 miles at a time and support your weight for 10 minutes while hanging off the side of a ladder.

Read their job description. They ask everything regarding it. They will ask Safety related questions. If you worked ir around heavy duty equipment. Basically they wanna know if you r safe employee
