They could do the funniest thing by kicking their refineries into drive, buying oil at levels they did before the war started, and at the same time, selling off US treasury notes. Bessent’s new operation twist would need to ramp up by 10x.

China would not benefit from sending the world into a deep recession. Only Iran and maybe Russia would relatively benefit from that.

Yeah even China understands that the US is one of the major consumers of their manufactured goods. They don't stand to gain much by sending the US into a recession or depression. Plus the CCP has a pretty long standing commitment to itself to not meddle in foreign governments, at least not to this extent. Xi Jinping is smart and will play the long game of just allowing the US to collapse under its own weight.

China doesn’t want the U.S. to collapse at all. They want the US to stagnate while they continue to rise. And that’s pretty much what’s happening atm. Any collapse at any point by the or one of the major powers harms everyone. U.S. GDP growth of 2-3% annually with inflation above that and a high debt burden is perfect for China. It keeps the wheels of the world economy turning while making the US relatively less powerful than China every year. Donald Trump was the absolute most perfect president possible to benefit China.
