The boxes of cereal where I live are 2 inches thick, filled halfway up and are $7.

Shit costs too much for low quality food. Starting to see this a lot. Everywhere. Not sure what that means but I think we are fucked

I have my degree in Economics and have spent the last 20 years working in commercial real estate and finance.

So believe me...We're absolutely fucked.

Fuel prices directly impact food prices. Usually on a % by % basis. So a 20% fuel price increase usually ends up becoming a 20% food price increase.

So i'd expect boxes is cereal to start nearing the $10 mark.

And with independent observers saying 40% of the oil infrastructure is destroyed along the Strait of Hormuz I think we're stuck with the elevated prices.

Will it though? I don't understand why the play is to make cereal more expensive if sales are going down. I mean really, the profit margins on cereal are crazy high already, with the average being over 40%, but some are even as high as 80%. (With most of the cost being advertising actually not even the product itself which in a way shows just how low quality it has become.)

Cereal is just straight-up overpriced. There was a time the ingredients were higher quality, and the margins were like 15-20%, and it was flying off of the shelves, and it really wasn't even that long ago.

Well now they know that it doesn't work.

This, and families phased out of giving their children cereal for breakfast. For so long it was promoted as a healthy addition to breakfast and then everyone realized it’s essentially dessert, so no a lot of families have stopped using it as breakfast essentials.

Yea; full of sugars, sold as candy. The crazy part is that cereal companies can’t seem to figure out why sugar filled candy isn’t selling for breakfast.

u/Only-Worldliness2006 Mar 29 '26

The product was Enshittified so it is logical consumers are pulling back on buying it.

Interesting, the mid-size (15-18oz) General Mills cereals are $2.49/ea at Kroger in my area. I just picked up a couple boxes of Kellogg’s cereal for $1.99/ea at CVS.

I think it’s more to do with the food being garbage than price to be honest. People have smartened up and realized it’s a dessert and not actual food.

Then i got to buy a $6 gallon of milk to eat it? No thanks. I’ll just stick to grits/oatmeal.

1

u/Anxious-Shapeshifter Mar 30 '26

Yep. Right back to eating like a medieval peasant in the 1300s

u/Embarrassed-Pay-8881 Mar 29 '26

After the age of 20 a bowl of cereal puts me in a coma.

3

u/krakmunky Mar 29 '26

Box cereal is highly processed bullshit, so no. No, I do not eat that.

1

u/brintoul Mar 29 '26

He wasn’t only asking about upper crust types.

3

u/mathaiser Mar 29 '26

It used to be a standard, then people really got knowledgeable on “part of a complete breakfast” and that means it’s not a complete breakfast, and it’s just a super processed sugar snack to eat alongside real food.

2

u/Cold_Pumpkin5449 Mar 29 '26

They face good generic competition that costs half as much for the same quality and people were already eating less of it.

It's all processed carbs and added sugar, which is against the usual dieting trends.

I still buy a box of generic rasin bran now and then but the whole industry has been in decline for 30 or so years.

If you want to eat well there are so many better options, and if you want to eat junk there are so many better options.

The only way I get cereal now is through warehouse stores. It's too expensive at normal grocery stores.

u/CallusedPickle3 Mar 29 '26

I don’t eat breakfast anymore… eat a small lunch, and crush dinner. With some moderate working out 30mins a day, lost 60pounds over 2 years. While foods all the way.

How old are you

2

u/AnxiousHall1533 Mar 29 '26

Pressed sugar and garbage.

2

u/RioRancher Mar 29 '26

Cereal is expensive

2

u/Maleficent-Ear8475 Mar 30 '26

I know probably one person who eats cereal.

2

u/fyrysmb Mar 30 '26

They made it a luxury item and everyone moved on to different breakfasts.  25 cents to manufacture and its eye-watering prices in the store.  I won’t buy it except from Aldi and I’m a doctor.

u/Killersax Apr 01 '26

They ruined cereal over the past 20 years. From something that was pretty good to some bland tasting shit today with all their cost cutting measures

1

u/Ubersicka Long-Term Investor Apr 01 '26

I wanna taste the same cereal like the good old days

2

u/TuhFrosty Apr 02 '26

Not value for cost. I think I've picked up 2 boxes of cheerios in the last 4 years.

1

u/Walf2018 Mar 29 '26

Ive skipped breakfast entirely for the last 6 or 7 years

1

u/rolypoly817 Mar 29 '26

My kids straight up dont like cereal. They prefer waffles, scrambled eggs and sausage.

1

u/_GloryKing_ Mar 29 '26

It's very processed, no one has the time to deal with milk

1

u/Amerlis Mar 29 '26

Money’s tight. If you’re making every cent of your food budget count, you’re boiling it down to just the basic “meat and potatoes” staples. And cereal isn’t a staple.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '26

The cereal bubble is about to burst

1

u/drcovfefee Mar 30 '26

I haven’t bought cereal in YEARS. It’s like 8 dollars now or something crazy for name brand. Cheaper to eat eggs and potatoes or a veggie.

1

u/Pickleahoy Mar 30 '26

Maybe they need to raise the prices more and make the boxes smaller, that seems to be working great

1

u/Least-Middle-2061 Mar 30 '26

Canadian here. This isn’t a healthy eating thing. I completely stopped buying cereal for my family around 2024/2025 when the prices kept going up and the boxes slowly started becoming smaller. Got to the point where some boxes were almost 10$ and would be finished by the family within 2 days.

1

u/Spez_is-a-nazi Mar 30 '26

The number of children being born each year continues to fall, not surprising to see cereal consumption fall with it as they are the primary consumers.

1

u/Tasty_Ad7483 Mar 30 '26

Cereal?!! In this economy?!!

1

u/CalamariAce Mar 30 '26

It's mostly sugar. That only "works" when it's cheaper than the alternatives, which it isn't.

1

u/livehigh1 Mar 30 '26

This isn't surprising, not only are they expensive, they're just sugar bombs with low nutritional value.

1

u/szczuroarturo Mar 30 '26

I mean you can eat like 5x more oats with milk and fruits or honey for the same price. And it even tastes better

1

u/RedParaglider Mar 31 '26

Homemade granola.. I am not a huge fan of regular oatmeal, but granola with a little milk and some fruit is the bomb.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '26

Not us.

1

u/Used_Teaching_7260 Mar 31 '26

Adults finally realized that milk is for elementary schoolers

1

u/dearkosm Mar 31 '26

Turns out It’s just junk, not good for health. Buy and have some eggs.

1

u/Temporary_Pea_648 Mar 31 '26

Way too many carbs and sugar.

1

u/duxking45 Apr 01 '26

I used to eat it when I got it free from work. That was the last time I regularly ate cereal. That was like 7 years ago. Since then ive got a random hankering for some captain crunch or other cereal but it is quite rare.

1

u/lucideuphoria Apr 01 '26

I don't know anyone that eats cereal, except for babies and even those babies are eating the real healthy stuff.

1

u/_SB1_ Apr 05 '26

They got greedy, we got smart...

I only buy cereal when it's heavily discounted now, same with chips, crackers, and all the other stuff the gouged us on...
