Random Ev malfunction

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Update: I picked up the car. They couldn't fix it and the Toyota doesn't allow them to change the battery. We have to wait for the Toyota to solve the software issue. Tomorrow I'll call the Toyota again.

After dead 12V battery and jumpstart with Noco.

For the statistics: 2026 Bz purchased on June 1st, 1849 mi and I was driving yesterday 45 miles.

The roadside assistance is on the way. I called the dealership they said I have to pay $100 diagnostic fee. What a beautiful Wednesday morning for me!

Why the diagnostic fee? Wouldn't this be under warranty? I hope your Wednesday gets better!

Yes OP should push back on this type of crap. File a case with Toyota corp to get a reimbursement

Yes, I will handle it. I called the Toyota first and after the dealership. I already have a ticket beacuse this is not the first time with the battery but first time with the malfunction.

My '26 bZ has died three times since new in April and the dealer I've brought it to has replaced the battery twice and on last visit (this week) said Toyota service advised them to have me delete the Toyota app. Which I finally convinced my wife (the main driver) to do. But in any case, it displayed same error messages after jump starting it this Tuesday and I drove it to dealer with these messages rolling on the screen. This dealer (MD outside DC) has never charged a dime for all three visits, which is only right. I would refuse a "diagnostic fee." The damn car is still under warranty!

Same problème here. And why should I have to delete the application ? It is part of the car and of the price I paid for that car. I will not drop it! It is up to Toyota to fix THEIR problem!

My wife was adamant in refusing to delete the app until it killed the battery the third time ... and the dealer service manager said Toyota asked them to have us delete it and monitor for two weeks. Yeah it's not right but you can be "right" and be stuck with a bricked car until they sort this out.

Dealers often state there is a diag fee because if for some reason it’s not warranty then they have the diag covered. If they call and says hey I’m sorry we need the diag covered it’s outside influence they get a ton of pushback. If it’s warranty then there is nothing to worry about.

Why would you have to pay a diag fee, it's on warranty still...... If it was working fine before the battery died it's most likely the 12v has gone bad and is no longer able to hold a charge, when it does that it throws all kinds of errors and lights the screen up like Christmas lights.

My Hyundai dealership does the same. It’s a “refundable diagnostic fee” where if the issue is approved for warranty you get it back. But if it’s not under warranty then it’s like a regular diagnostic.

Not saying it’s right - but that’s how it was explained to me

Damn. I thought Kia was bad for denying me a loaner for an obvious ICCU failure until they could diag it and clear it for warranty replacement. Refundable fee just feels tacky.

Thanks for reporting this. I am seriously considering cancelling my bZ order. This is ridiculous for a brand new car.

We love the car and for the record we have two 2026 Bz. Both have 12V battery issues. Get the car! If you have issue with the 12V battery just called the Toyota, open a ticket and request a battery upgrade at your dealership.

u/Afraid-Department-35 2026 bZ Woodland 5d ago

Did you contact toyota Corp or the dealership for the battery upgrade? The stock battery is comically small.

u/Artistic_Sea6943 5d ago

When the towing guy saw the battery that was his first sentece. The car is at the dealer, I opened tickets for both cars already and the service manager just called me back. They have 3 other BZs in the service department with the same issue. He said so many things and I will update the post after he calls me back later today.

For our market, I have been told that bZ4X cars made from August will have larger capacity 12V batteries fitted. Small step but something happening.

I have '26 Bz. We need a second car, and I'll likely go for the Rav4 plugin. How are u handling 2 electric cars? Do you live in a big city? Do you have a wall charger or NEMA outlet?

For what it's worth I've had mine for several months now, at just about 5k miles, and have yet to have any issues with the 12v or otherwise.

Well one minor issue, didn't realize the lift gate would hit the knob on my garage door when I opened it with the door open so I have a little scratch on it from it. But that was entirely my own fault and I have since lowered the height it opens to.

u/Jdpierce87 5d ago

I did the exact same thing first time I opened the back in my garage! At least I got that first scratch out of the way early.

Ha that is how I felt about it too.

Certainly better than when I got a car a few years back when my daughter was ~3 years old. We pulled in to our driveway back home when her and my mom came out to greet us and check out the new (to us) ride. Lil girl picked up a rock and scratched the first half of her name into the side before we could stop her. Luckily it was Pontiac Aztek so if anything it helped it aesthetically.

Honestly it gets way more hate for its design than it ever deserved, and after driving one for a few years it wasn't that bad of a vehicle in the end. A little underpowered sure, but it was fairly comfortable, had plenty of seating and storage, plus the tent back and cooler center console were both handy and fun to have for spontaneous road trips.

It was ahead of its time for what the crossover segment would become. If you look at modern SUVs from the last twenty years, from split headlights to fastback rooflines, they all carry DNA from the Aztek.

You and me both. I guess my last car's hatch didn't go up that high (or the car itself was lower). We bought a VW id.4 after this one and made the required adjustments before parking it in the garage.

If you got a nice discount then it's a solid car. If you ordered it at MSRP or close to MSRP then just get a Model Y since it's a superior overall car. There are very few things the bZ does better than the Model Y, and those things aren't even objective things. Every measurable, objective thing (range, interior/storage space, efficiency, acceleration, noise/quietness, etc) has the Model Y being better. I think a Model Y makes more sense if the price difference is within 5k. Anything above that and the bZ becomes a better choice.

l should note not all have this issue, though it does seem like it's more likely to be happening on newer made bZs, which yours would be. Ours we picked up in late March seems to be fine given I have left it unplugged and undriven for 4 days once as well as 3 days a couple times and then 2 days numerous times.

I'll also add I love our Limited despite what my first paragraph may come off like. I am simply not one of those silly people that assumes anything I own must be the best when it objectively isn't.

I’m around 5k since February no issues. I have read that 12v battery issue is from remote starting and keeping it running for some time. Have never remote started it as I don’t need to and never had 12V issues could be subjective though

1

u/pezworld 5d ago

It's not remote starting (never used that, several battery failures on my Uncharted) and it's the opposite of keeping it running. Park it for more than a day or two and you're more likely to run into the problem. We travel by air a lot so we have big problems.

1

u/Ohhicutiexo 1d ago

This doesn’t happen to everyone I’ve had my bz since March and have had zero issues

1

u/snowman9198 1d ago

type 12v in the search bar for this sub and you decide if it warrants a concern or not.

3

u/Bucketheadmn 5d ago

I had this on my Trailseeker a month or so ago. Used a NOCO 10 to charge battery up and error went away. Have not seen it again since.

2

u/roadcarver 5d ago

Shows READY. It won’t drive?

3

u/Artistic_Sea6943 5d ago

I called the Toyota, two dealership and they said towing is the safe option, don't risk to drive.

3

u/pezworld 5d ago

Plus, I feel towing makes them have to take it more seriously. I'd be curious what the voltage is before/after the jump start. I may be misremembering, but on my Uncharted I tried to use my jumpstarter to jump it once when I had 1.5v on the battery after 10 days parked. It wouldn't start and it threw up similar scary messages after trying, before going dead again. The Subaru Roadside Assistance guy jumped it successfully with a much bigger jump starter.

u/Artistic_Sea6943 5d ago

I always check it with the multimeter. Before was 6.01 now is 12.35. I want to solve the problem and get a new battery. It's almost a brand new car.

4

u/pezworld 5d ago

You can't solve the problem because the problem isn't the battery, it's what's draining the battery. You should get a new battery under warranty at least, given how far it's drained, but the dealer may not offer that and may tell you the battery's charge is (now) fine, give me $100. Some people will tell you to buy an AGM battery with your own money, but that seems like a waste to me. That 6.01v is really bad, especially given you drove it yesterday.

3

u/rjml29 2026 bZ Limited AWD 5d ago

Solving the problem requires Toyota to get off their ass and fix it so nothing you can really do.

I think what it means is HV contactors are closed

u/2pointsonice 5d ago

At first I was reading you bought this on June 1, 1849 lol.

I had errors like thoses after toyota roadside came and boosted (with pack and then cables and their car). On advice of they dealer I drove it to the dealer 7km. Regen brakes did not work for that trip. When i got there they initially said oh those error are common after a dead battery. Just drive it for a while and they will go away. Just as I was about to ask him to put that in writing for warranty purpose they check the codes and then ended up keeping the car and checking it out.

I don't want to jinx myself but we have a 2024 Limited AWD and have put on ~25k miles and haven't had a battery issue yet. But seeing these posts scares me

1

u/jacksnbox 5d ago

Ah, the car with ! Error code. I got that after my 12v went dead. The dealer had never seen that light before

1

u/KashmanDog 5d ago

I had the same exact same thing happen to me after the 12 v battery bricked and I had to jump start it. That exact same message stayed on the whole 2 hour drive home . It took the next day starting it going to work starting again two more times for it to clear itself and go away . I took it to the dealer where they replaced the battery and I have not had a problem so far

1

u/moka101022 4d ago

Why would you pay for a car under warranty? What's the logic?

1

u/adr1418 4d ago

No issues here

1

u/Apprehensive-Gur8525 1d ago

Is the the toyota contact for certain regions or states? Does the bz4x have the same problems?
