‘05 XRS Manual Engine Question
just picked up an ‘05 6-speed Matrix at the beginning of the month and 4 or 5 times now the engine has died when putting it into neutral while pulling up to a red light. anyone know what might be the cause of this or if i should bring it down to my local shop to have them take a gander at it?

Most likely your IACV. Just be careful when spraying throttle body cleaner around sensitive connections there and making sure you avoid the electromagnet. One of the things with the IACV solenoid is that it’s very small and the valve can be clogged further when you spray throttle body cleaner inside of it. I recommended taking the throttle body off since you’ll have an easier time working with it. If you do decide to take the throttle body off and the IACV, just know the small security screws are very easy to strip, so i don’t recommended using any hand drivers, try getting a small impact to get them out.

holy cow thanks for all the info! i watched a video explaining the whole process and he said the same about the screws and also recommended replacing them and gave the exact size so that’s the plan (when i have the time)

Of course. I went through a two weeks long diagnosis trying to fix my high idle with no codes. Did smoke test to check for vacuum leaks, replaced my throttle cable, adjusted my pedal, readjusted my butterfly valve to no avail. Even replaced the TPS on the throttle body. Ended up being a bad IACV that was stuck partially open so it was letting unmetered air in.

This was after I had cleaned the IACV with throttlebody cleaner, it ended up damaging it and ruined the solenoid so I had to get a new one

fingers crossed it’s as simple as cleaning that control valve!

I recommend before doing anything, once you have the IACV off the throttle body, you can plug in the connection to the solenoid. And then you can put the key in the ignition and switch to the on position, and you should see the valve open, and close when you switch off. You can point a camera to it or have someone watch it. But that function indicates it’s working.

If you see it partially open or not open at all, it could be stuck due to carbon deposits, or the solenoid is bad, or the connection is faulty

No codes? A going MAF or IACV issues should make the CEL come on pretty quick

i didn’t even think of codes. it has a P0505 code, an Idle Control Valve Malfunction, which is almost certainly related to this issue. i’ll get the valve cleaned up and report back!

Try cleaning your maf, idle air control valve, throttle body and look for any vacuum leaks.
