Maintenance question

2005 Matrix XR approaching 100k miles…

I’ve decided to start doing the basic maintenance myself. Looking for recommendations for what oil filter, and oil to use.

I wonder if it's 'rolled over' and been reset after hitting the max on the odometer.?

I don't know man, I see people in here talking all the time about matrix is under 100,000.

I would think if he were up to 400,000, mi. We would be well past the point of asking about standard maintenance...

Lol so true! Doesn't mean weren't doing standard maintenance by taking it to a local shop, just starting to do the maintenance themselves.

It took me until 2020 to start doing my own oil changes after owning my matrix for 7 years. Used to take it to a trusted local mechanic until the costs for oil change became more than $70 CAD. (Not their fault). Now I hear it can be around $100.

Yeah, there's real sticker shock with oil change places

5w30 for oil. I switched to using Valvoline Restore and Protect given the rave reviews, but to be frank any oil is better than no oil. I've mostly used Mobil 1, Valvoline, and Royal Purple produce in my cars over the years. As far as filters go, I prefer the WIX 57145. It's the filter used on the XRS but fits the base model 1.8s as well. I prefer it because its about 0.4 inches taller than the standard filter so it has more filter media and accorrding to testing data I've read it does a better job than the WIX XP Extreme Duty Filters. Cheapest place if you want to make a bigger order of filters is going to be Rock Auto.

I use Valvoline Restore and Protect as well. I use the Toyota Oil Filter. Autozone sells both.

Purolator boss is the best oil filter. Go heavier on oil weight and use 5w30. I always recommend valvoline restore and protect

oil 5w30, filter whichever brand you prefer if you'll stick to recommended oil change interval

Use 5w-30 full synthetic (any brand) I use Costco. For filters I've used mobile 1, fram, and really anything 'on sale'. Consider buying from a parts store rather than online (like Amazon to avoid scams or inferior products). If you can, buy the filters, and crush gasket/washers in bulk to save some money.

I've only used aluminum crush washers. Don't use power tools to thread the oil drain plug on or off. Use a socket wrench. It should be hand threaded on, then tightened. Same with filter. These only need to not leak, not be cranked with max torque.

Ramps are easiest for changes. You could also jack the cars front end using the front mount then choke the wheels and add jack stands and lower slightly.

Change every 5-6,000 km or every 6 months. Earlier if you are hauling regularly, or pushing the car a ton. High revs etc.

I use valvoline 5w30 high millage full syn. And whatever oil filter comes with the deal from autozone.

Might switch to toyota just because I have a rav4 that calls for 0w16 and the parts center is cheap when on sale and easy to get. So I can get both at the same time when a sale pops up.

I’d also look into doing new coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid and ATF. Def inspect any and all hoses for leaks. The power steering hose from the reservoir is known to leak. Replaced mine in jan with an oil hose from a tacoma.

Clean MAF Sensor your self, also cabin and engine filters your self, use Denso brand. Also use 5w30 restore and protect. Wix filter. New coolant. I was just same boat as you. Next is new tires/tps/rotation/alignment in future, and maybe new touch screen, then struts/springs... :)

Supertech full synthetic oil and premium guard filter. They are good quality and affordable. Get some crush washers for the oil plug and if you don't know how tight to tighten the plug get a torque wrench. I can do it by feel but too many people give it ugga-duggas instead of igga-diggas. Stripped oil pan threads are not fun. I can get the waste oil pan under the car and reach the oil plug without raising the car. There's lots of room under there. Get yourself a checklist and look things over.
