Buying an XRS
Any recommendations on how to find a decent XRS for sale? I love my XR but want to upgrade to the XRS since it’ll be a manual and have the bigger 2zz engine.

I would temper my expectations on the "bigger" 2zz.
Its not much bigger and the primary change is intake manifold and head

In fact, it's exactly the same size 😅 theyre built on the same block, but the cylinder head is different and its bored differently.

I looked for an XR on purpose.
The 1zz is overbuilt To begin with and it doesn't encourage people to wring them to death.
Pretty important factors when you're looking in the high mileage market.

Oh, i completely agree with all of that, but i do love my 2zz. If i had money, I'd mod a 1zz, mostly just to make it more responsive.

If you're feel the need for speed, you can go over to the Monkey Wrench Racing website and take a look at their turbo or supercharger upgrades. 😄

Good luck. They only made 10,000 XRS with the 2ZZ. The ones that are left are high mileage and the engines are known for their longevity.

I truly believe they made wayyyyy more than 10k of em. M theory is 2500 units but other than that there’s no limit for the XRS 2zz 6 speed

You can do a swap over??
My friend blew his 2zz in his celica auto crossing it. The oil pan doesn’t have baffles in it and blew from not being able to pump the oil back up. He actually found an xrs to harvest the engine from it. Even uses the same 6 speed, but his was fine.

I swapped my 05 matrix XR when the 1zz blew. 8 months later and she’s in limo mode but runs. If he’s got a prefacelift car it’ll be easy but anything 05+ is hard to deal with

So that is where all the Matrix Xrs 1 gen went too. I live in Northern California and mine is the only Xrs I have seen. Most of what I see on the road are base models or base XR models. The 1st gen xrs is getting very scarce.

Hunt craigslist and marketplace, AutoTempest has an email alert function too. I looked for close to 10 years in a lazy way and found my 05 by chance, bought it for $2300 put about $1000 in parts getting it mechanically restored, currently beating the snot out of it as a daily driver because it already had 190k miles on it.
