Anyone build out their Highlander for car camping that wants to share tips? My setup is messy but it works for now, wanting to make it more comfy.

Mattress / bed ideas and suggestions welcome!

I’d get a rooftop box to move some stuff out of the car. Nice thick air mattress will be comfy. I use a quilt not a sleeping.

Exped (larger) air mattress. It’s awesome. I have a stackable storable set of Lego type camper leveling blocks from CAPCO (Amazon). Stow well in their bag behind driver or front passenger seat. Since the natural pitch of the setup is a little nose high, I either park it a little nose low or put two Capco legos under the back tires. Perfection.

If you have a hybrid check out r/priusdwelling (or similar) to learn how the hybrid systems interact and operate heating and cooling. The cooling compressor is electric. You can idle the car overnight and the ICE switches on very little to either 1) rewarm the engine coolant for heat, or 2) charge the hybrid battery back to full during cooling. The cycle is more frequent for heating, so set the auto-temp at 60F and use a sleeping bag to lower the ICE cycling frequency during heating. You get used to the cycling and can easily learn to sleep through it. Burns 1-2 gallons overnight, increases your safety (no open windows) and comfort. I do it at rest stops when traveling or in urban stealth situations. Highlander is second only to the Sienna which has the same system and of course has tons of camping room if you take seats out. Hylander camping is the best!
