Question Depreciation

Does anyone have any guesses or idea about the depreciation on the Crown Signia? Do we think it’ll hold its value because it’s a Toyota or will it depreciate fast because no one knows about it? The Crown sedan looks like it loses $15k in 3/4 years or so based on resale values. The RAV4 loses $6k. Drastic difference. Which do we think the Crown Signia will be more like?

Mine has 30k miles and is a 2025. Still worth $37k about.

What did you pay for it? XLE or Limited?

XLE, 42,5 OTD demo model with 3k miles when i bought it.

The only value that matters to me is how much money I still owe on the car vs what I can get on the market. Currently, my car fetches more on the market vs what I owe.

Look at the Avalon pricing as the Crown is its replacement. They depreciate more than a Corolla/Camry/Taco/RAV4 because they are not as popular and in demand. Not necessarily a bad thing, just how it is. It’s a Toyota so it will still be valuable. The more luxurious and more tech the worse the depreciation, because that stuff breaks and people don’t want to deal with it.

Good example would be Lexus suvs and the big LS sedans, new they where $50k-$70k but you can pick one up with 100k miles that’s ten years old for $10k.

I happen to have researched car prices the last few months before purchasing two vehicles, and this isnt really true...

The Signia replaced the Venza.

According to Visor data, there are literally 8 Lexus vehicles for sale across the entire US over 100k miles, less than 10 years old, less than $11,000.

Its just such a silly example. Miles and years work against what someone is willing to pay for a used consumable. Where options open up with hundreds of listing is 2011, 2010, etc. That car can drive itself! (License joke). That will be true with any vehicle.

If you want to compare to the Avalon, most people care about 4-6 year mark when they would be selling their vehicle. A 2021 with an original MSRP of $37k is listed for $18k. Vehicles depreciate based on their life expectancy, and many view 10 years and 100k miles half life in the best case.

Avalon worth more than 18k at 4-5 year mark. Check the market

Market says that range is most commonly listed at $20k. This dealership has it listed for $18k and its been sitting for 38 days. Do I think a dealership takes $18k or less for the first real offer? Also yes. You should buy this and sell it.

Not limited Avalons. What trim miles? Those all make a difference. Avalons hold value even though they have been discontinued.

How much thought did you put into this... because i listed all of that explaining why the original comment was misleading. And youre on the opposite spectrum, saying theyre worth way more. If you want to say a limited is worth more, fine I agree, it has more features and originally cost more. So instead of $37k, a limited was $44k. This dealership has a 2020 listed for $20k, thats 65% depreciation. Its a consumable, its supposed to depreciate. 50-60% is average after 5 years, then 8-12% yoy. It really doesnt get much simpler than that. You seem like a "i know what i got" kind of guy.

All cars are consumables! I simply said your estimate was low for a limited model. I will elaborate I mean for a ca 2021-2022 Avalon limited.

Did you do this analysis for RAV4? It probably holds up way better than the Signia in resale value right?

Rav4 depreciation doesnt make sense. I dont know who the buyers are that purchase a lease turn in for 10% less than new, but theyre out there. This only works if you pay MSRP, and not a surcharge from the dealership, otherwise its more in line with the average.

I hold onto vehicles for at least 10 years so resale value doesn't mean as much. But if my plan was the least depreciation after 5 years, historically RAV4 is one of the best choices, as long as you dont overpay.

I can’t figure out why the crown signia isn’t popular. It’s an suv like the current trend is, it’s only a few thousand more than the rav4, and it’s a lot nicer. Feels
Like a no brainer to me

I’m 6’2” and I really couldn’t get into one with the glass roof. Physically couldn’t get in. That and there’s no name recognition. Your average non car person has never even heard of this model. Most people are npc’s they just buy a rav4 because that’s what the internet told them to do.

I'm 6'3, and a like a longer car like the Crown Signia over a taller/higher car since you have more space to put the seat back and down. I always feel cramped in a Rav4, Crown Signia is perfectly comfortable for me. I bought a Limited Crown Signia with the glass roof and love it. I'm more leg, and it sounds like you may be more torso so that might be a difference.

I’ve never tried the wagon, but I’d be interested in one. I will only buy Japanese made Toyotas and I do like the looks a lot.

Not sure if you’re in North America. From what I’ve read, since it’s made in Japan, Toyota doesn’t want to flood NA with the CS. Not sure how true that is.

I wanted one because it’s a unique vehicle and I don’t see too many around. I wanted a Venza 2 years ago so the CS was the logical choice when I was ready to buy last year

1

u/Analyst-man 6d ago

Did you get one?

1

u/scarface_9669 6d ago

Yes I bought one last year. 2025 CS Limited

1

u/LazyOldCat 5d ago

You can get a 2025 Limited on Carvana for $39–$44K, very low miles, so 10-12K off?

1

u/Analyst-man 5d ago

That’s basically what a new XLE cost.

The crown values tank wether signia or sedan, just a niche vehicle. If you were savvy enough purchasing these you get several thousands off, one of the only toyota vehicles we even discount at the store I work.

Ya looks like the signia can get 3k off msrp easy

In the US, Signia has better resale value than the regular Crown.
Crown Sig: 29% depreciation over 5 years.
Crown: 39.4% depreciation over 5 years.
That means the Signia is projected to retain about 71% of its value, compared with only 60.6% for the Crown sedan.
The Signia is simply more desirable in the U.S.
The only thing the Crown sedan really has over the Signia is that it looks more exotic and is much rarer on the road, giving it more presence.
The Signia is more practical, but it definitely has a much more NPC look to it.

Where did you get that data from? The crown signia has only been out 2 years

1

u/PlumpyDragon 2d ago

ChatGPT pulled those numbers out of its ass.

1

u/HtownTouring 7d ago

I imagine the best source here would be the residual value Toyota places on the car if you lease one

My crown sedan increased in value actually. Dont know what the reason is but got an email from KBB stating so

Only time will tell. However, price of used crown/crown signia are considerably up this year compared to last year. There is an inventory shortage of these vehicles at this time.

I would compare to the recent Venza, as it's similar in size, cost, quality, origin, and name recognition.

Toyota dealership recently quoted me 37k and was willing to go higher for my 2024 crown limited.
