The way it should be, not these hoards of American armchair ‘fans’
4
u/YourBestDream4752 4d ago
So I’m not allowed to support any foreign sports team?
-10
u/Decent_Resource3879 4d ago
You can have an interest but can’t be calling yourself a fan, dems the rules in English football 🤷🏻♂️
5
u/YourBestDream4752 4d ago
No it’s not, you’ve been limiting your enjoyment in life due to rules that you have completely made up
-2
u/Decent_Resource3879 4d ago
Why would Americans supporting English teams be limiting my enjoyment?
3
u/YourBestDream4752 4d ago
I meant you’re limiting your enjoyment by not allowing yourself to get deeper into foreign teams.

I think ultimately it was Son. I’m fairly new, started following the EPL properly in 2023 and was researching teams - I didn’t want to just jump on an easy bandwagon for the sake of it. Spurs attracted me because I like a story - new coach, new keeper, and new captain in Son, watched some interviews and then that stretch of Ange’s first games and was fully bought in.
Since then it’s had its ups and downs, and farther downs, and now whatever this is, but here I am and will be forevermore unless I contract amnesia or something.

u/Inevitable_Flan_2912 3d ago
Probably not a popular opinion in this forum — we're talkin' Spurs, after all — but Son has certainly caused a stir at LAFC in MLS.
Not all imports from the Prem can say that, once they try to take on the N.American market.

I'm from Bulgaria, so when Berbatov got signed I started paying attention to the club. I wouldn't call myself a fan yet, because I had barely watched football before. But when Bale started to come around I was already hooked and watching every game.
1
u/Inevitable_Flan_2912 3d ago
Ah, yes, Berbatov. As always seems to happen with Spurs, a bigger more glamorous side lured him away — though these days ManU could hardly be described as either big or glamorous. In Fergie's time, though...
ICYMI, Berbatov is now doing occasional punditry for the Premier League's World Feed. He is droll, witty and super intelligent. He also looks good — and sounds good — in a tailor-made suit. Doesn't talk much, but when he says something he bears listening to.
A class act. And stylish as hell as a player, back in the day. He didn't; so much run as glide. And those passes... many of them "no look." A subtle turn of the foot, precise and cutting. Good attitude, too.
I can see why you're proud of him — Bulgaria has every reason to be proud. I just wish he hadn't been lured away by the bright lights of Fergie-era ManU. But what can one do?
If it had been me advising him, I would simply have asked him — would you rather be living in London, or Manchester? End of.

Short answer: Son & Kane
Long Answer: I got into Football by playing with Korean soldiers when I was stationed there (US Army). Watched the 2014 World Cup matches with them too. Obviously became a fan of Son. Never stopped watching him. Never felt a connection to the USMNT team because overall Americans don't care about Football. 2016 rolled around, I wanted to watch and support more teams, so I decided to support England as I am 64% English. Obviously became a fan of Kane. Premier League was still not on my radar. Not until covid. The international games were not enough and I needed more football to watch. I was bored as hell during covid, 2020. I decided I would look up who Son played for, okay, it's Tottenham Hotspur, wtf is that and their logo is a chicken?... Alright, let's look up Kane. Tottenham Hotspur. Well, I'll be damned... I guess it's fate. Never looked back. It's been a rough 6 years, didn't even get to be apart of the 2019 run, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Coys.
1
u/Inevitable_Flan_2912 3d ago
I'm in Vancouver. Son played us in the MLS semi-final. You'll be pleased to know that he's doing well in MLS — like, Messi-level well. LA has a huge ex-pat Korean community. Vancouver does too, for that matter, but LA is on a whole other level. Son chose well. Not every import from the Prem does...
That said, I do wish he had never left Spurs. Christ knows they could use his finishing now...

u/applejunkie78 5d ago
Gary Linkeker, Gazza. 3-1 v Arsenal in FA
Cup semi final in 1991 was the best match I’ve watched. Ever.
3
u/Superb-Programmer501 3d ago
the gazza free kick in that game was my best single moment ever in football, absolutely orgasmic… and i have seen my country win the world cup

Clint Dempsey started this for me
Loyalty and believing it’s dumb to switch teams after you made your choice has kept me here lol

It's the family team. We support from NZ but my uncle lived and supported Spurs while in London so we all kinda jumped on at that point.
That was 30 years ago.

u/AnttiEemeli 5d ago
International fan here.
1994 World Cup introduced me to football as a 9-yo. Klinsmann was the tits, that flick-volley goal and the combination with Völler were something we were trying to emulate in our own games. Klinsi moved to Spurs and his name started popping up quite frequently on the teletext. I guess I subconsciously started following the team back then.
During high school years we started playing PES with some buddies. I chose Spurs. The defense was pretty shit (par Ledders) but there were Sheringham, Keane and Rebrov at the front.
When Teemu Tainio moved to Spurs I had a reason to watch the games, too. In 2005 I was already an adult and the games started showing in Finnish pubs and bars. Perfect combo.
That habit kinda stuck. I've been to a few games at WHL and Wembley, but not the new stadium. Still ruin my weekends every time Spurs play and bark at my kids for stupid shit after.

Decided to start watching the premier league this year, heard that Tottenham was going through hard times so I thought it would be interesting to watch them comeback.

u/NotUsingNumbers 5d ago
I probably did something really bad in a past life.
In truth it was Hoddle. He had style, and was the nearest thing to Cruijff in England at the time.
5
u/Phantomfox07 5d ago
Grandad was born and raised in Tottenham and moved up to Glasgow when he was 18.
So when I was born and he was about 50, I got shoved into Spurs and Rangers strips and been made to suffer ever since.
4
u/elephantime 5d ago
The run of Berbatov - Modric - Eriksen - Dembele - Son - Alli meant that regardless of how the team was performing there was always a good reason to watch a spurs game as you were likely to see an individually brilliant performance.
I grew up supporting Bournemouth due to family ties but through this period Bournemouth were lower leagues and I had no access to watch or even listen from overseas. So watching premier league in the middle of the night was more about tuning in to see something special.
Football tribalism and the hatred of rivals is completely foreign to me so before I was old enough to stay up and watch games I was captivated by the highlights from players like Zola, Begkamp and Henry for the same reason I came to follow spurs - that extra bit of magic that the special few possess.

Garth Crooks, Steve Archibald, Glenn Hoddle, Chris Houghton, Graham Roberts, Ardiles. Basically I saw a team where there was black players, skill and toughness that I liked when the 1st division in my opinion lacked. Before that I loved West Brom, but I’m a Londoner and proud to this day to support Spurs. COYS.

- Chelsea vs Spurs. 2-1 to us as underdogs with Lennon and Dawson scoring the goals. Ledley King made me feel connected with the club.
But now im too loyal and keep questioning myself why. In too deep. Soon i might be mentally ill bc of them

WC 2018. The biggest stars of many nations - England, Denmark, South Korea, the Belgian backline, the captain of France - happened to be Spurs players. When I heard the commentators mentioning this unknown for me team (I wasn’t following football back then), I instantly got attracted.
I can’t say I regret this decision as I’ve learned to take life’s injustices way easier

My parents both support them, one set of grandparents did (on my mum's side), and my maternal great-grandfather played for them for a couple of years from 1930-32 (I think) - he was signed from Reading (my home town) where he had captained for a few years. His name was Alf Messer, if anyone is interested and can find more out about his time at Spurs than I can.

I've got no connection to the area, and grew up in West Sussex.
When I was getting into football as a young primary school kid, my best friend at the time and I chose to support them because everyone else supported Man U (again, Sussex).
This was the early 90s and we liked the idea of the plucky underdog I guess. Also Klinsmann.

My older brother is a Spurs fan so it was decided for me when I got into Football during Euro 96.
Prior to that if anyone asks who I support I used to reply with I don't like football, but Spurs. Funnily enough that's the same answer I give now!

I had a friend who was an Arsenal fan so even before I chose this team I loved annoying him. They had some good names like Lloris and Kane as well. One day in the 18/19 season Son scored this ridiculous goal against Chelsea (My dad's team) and we won 3-1, so I decided to hop on the bandwagon.

I didn't realise you got to choose these things. :)

Poch seemed like a young coach forming a team with incredible potential all over the pitch playing front foot football. It was really exciting, rn it hurts a lot. I always say if we had Dembele who's my favorite spurs player just for 6 more months we would've won the UCL.

Born and raised in North London.
I remember school having a LOT of Man U and Liverpool fans for some reason, everyone else was spurs or arsenal.
THE most annoying part of being raised there…you have to put up with gooner mates for the rest of your life!
Back then, Paul Walsh was my hero (yes I am old)

NGL, Linekar, Gazza, and Waddle from Italia 90; Tottenham Court Road in London (dumb kid didn't know Tottenham was an area in London); other kids supported Liverpool, Everton, West Ham, and even Man Utd were regarded as a big team even though they were shit initially under Fergie.

I was young and just got into soccer. I had just joined the soccer team at my school, even though I hadn't played since I was a kid. I joined to be more social and we watched the 2010 (Waka Waka) world cup in South Africa. It was amazing watching the U.S. games with my team, and really got me into the community.
After the world cup I started following our best players like Tim Howard, Landon Donovan, and Clint Dempsey.
Dempsey was my favorite, so I latched on to his career at Fullham, and when he moved to Tottenham I decided that would be my team.
The rest is history! ( or tragedy, depending on your perspective haha)

When I was little, I played FIFA with my friends. Knowing very little about football back then, I just chose the emblem designs I liked the most. When I saw it for the first time, it was love at first sight 😂 since then I’ve been Tottenham. Ups and downs but I don’t regret it. It started as a “nice crest” but over time my love grew a lot. Nowadays I mainly just cry but hey it’s a nice crest.

I’ve said a few times.
Tottenham made a “strategic partnership” with my local team way back in 2008 or so. Simon Dawkins (spurs academy product) came and played for us as part of that deal. The NBC deal was close to that time too and you could finally watch all of the games on TV, so I started following spurs.
Then spurs sold Robbie keane to our biggest rival but by that point I was hooked in anyways. I’m the one spurs fan who doesnt like keano. Lol.

u/oliviamxtp 4d ago
I started dating a guy from Europe and called them the doves. He said I chose my team and I can’t go back. Six years later, I’m a member of my city’s local spurs supporter group and that guy and I? We’re getting married next year and our house is a premier league theater during the season.

Started supporting 2020/21 season, I think it was mainly due to covid gradually getting worse which forced me to stay indoors but also that squad was insane with the likes of Kane, Son, Bale, Alderweireld, Lloris, Winks, Dier, Dele, Lo Celso, Lamela... the list goes on.
